"The Franchise Speaks His Mind" Written by: The Franchise on 8/31/2007

Yet another devastating blow has been dealt to the WWE, and I think this is just the tip of the iceberg. With each passing hour, it seems as if another WWE contracted wrestler is being added to the list of clients associated with Signature Pharmacy or another online pharmacy that were apparently distributing steroids and other drugs as if they were candy to people all over the world. Now, I think more and more, people are actually investigating what is going on inside the world of professional wrestling, and it isn't a pretty sight.
For years, Vince McMahon has touted his wellness policy, and in the professional wrestling world, it probably is the best policy. But, lets be honest - there are too many loopholes. If you had a prescription from a doctor to take steroids or human growth hormone, you wouldn't be penalized for taking that drug. Thats why Chris Benoit was able to pass his random tests. I think things are going to have to change, especially now that congress is planning on having hearings on the industry.
I wrote recently on a message board what I feel in my heart - that I care more about the welfare of the guys who entertain me over what their bodies physically look like. Vince McMahon has been the root of all of this, because he has been fascinated with larger than life wrestlers. There was even something talked about a short time before the Benoit tragedy that wrestlers had to be a certain height and weight to even be considered for the WWE. I remember as a child watching Dusty Rhodes, Jerry Lawler and Eric Embry (just to name a few) captivate me week after week wrestling, and we all know Dusty wasn't on the juice, so I don't buy the story that wrestlers cannot get over if they don't have a certain look.
We learned rather quickly that the Chris Benoit tragedy wasn't going to make anyone do anything about what goes on behind the curtain. I, for one, certainly hope congress forces the issue, because it's more important for me to know the guys that i'm watching are going to be able to live out their lives past their mid 40's. I'll take talent and passion over a physique any day!
