Kurt Angle – Is The Joke On Us?
By Mike The Mark
You mention his name on a news board or blog, and people start talking. You read about his insane comments and you laugh. You hear stories about the supposed "train wreck" that he has become and you may feel sorry, or you may say its his own doing and he deserves whatever happens to him. But I am beginning to wonder about all of this. Please continue reading, and keep an open mind as to what I am about to say.
Professional wrestling has always been a place to exaggerate things. Height, weight, and attendance are three perfect examples. It has also always been about self promotion. Hulk Hogan is a perfect example as possibly the greatest self promoter there ever has been. Mr. Angle is now in a position to take a company (TNA), put it on his shoulders to attract more viewers and make it bigger. So, each week we read about the silly things Mr. Angle says on radio shows and interviews. Here are just a few of the funny lines that have come out of his mouth recently:
- Says his King of the Ring match with Hogan (when he wore that wig) was a ***** match. "Stole the show"
- Dixie has an NFL owner backing her. He claims it is a "rumor" just to be clear.
- He said his deal with TNA is financially better than at WWE and at WWE he had a one
million dollar guarantee and usually made 2.5 to 3 million.
These are just a few examples of what he has been saying in recent months, there are many more quotes, but these three make my point. We all know Kurt is exaggerating and telling stories. But, I think there is a reason here, and I think Kurt is fooling all of us. As I said earlier, this business is all about promotion, and I think Angle is doing this by any means necessary. Regardless of what he says on a weekly basis, people are still doing the most important thing they can do in Kurt Angle’s mind – they are talking about him constantly! His name is at the forefront of many discussions among the smarks all over the internet. And I think that’s exactly what he wants. Here is a guy who is a company man for a decade, who never says a word about anything, who just does his job. He leaves and all of the sudden he becomes a chatterbox? Believe me, there is a reason behind it.
New Jack once said “good publicity, bad publicity, fuck it – I’m gonna stay on the news!” I think Kurt Angle is doing the same thing – staying in our discussions and thoughts about professional wrestling, to promote himself and the new company he works for – TNA.
