IWA Mid South

This week for That's My Story and I'm Sticking To It I'll be telling you what I think of attending IWA Mid South Point Proven at the ECW Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I've followed IWA somewhat with the internet and I was skeptical that the show would be worth the almost six hour trip from Pittsburgh to the ECW Arena but despite being skeptical if the show would be worth it the wrestling crew burned some CDs and made the six hour trip to the show. A funny side note to traveling to the show is that most of the roads in Philly are one way roads and with it being close to the fourth of July there were many festivals. The traffic made it difficult to find road signs and after literally driving in circles for about an hour a traffic cop was able to tell us directions to get the arena. IWA has had it's share of good matches, with the CM Punk/Chris Hero series being the most notable but it's also had some ridiculous matches that included lobsters being used in a death match. When we finally arrived at the arena there were already fans outside the building waiting for the doors to open for the show. When the doors opened we got our front row tickets for the show and went into the building. Before the show started I noticed that most of the floor seats in the one section were empty but people showed up so it didn’t look so empty before the show started. The show started with an unannounced four way match for the Light Heavy Weight title. It was Brandon Thomaselli v.s. Jack Thriller v.s. Ricochet v.s. Billy Roc. I'd heard of Thomselli and I've seen some Ricochet matches before but I had no idea who Jack Thriller or Billy Roc were. Thriller looked like a terrible imitation of The Green Lantern and he started the match against Billy Roc. Thriller and Roc messed up some spots to start the match but the match improved when Ricochet entered the ring. I was impressed with Ricochet and so was the crowd. The match had some innovative moves and Thomaselli retained the title. CJ Otis/Fukimoto v.s. Akira Raijin/Brute Issei was next and I didn't know any of the wrestlers in this match but it was announced that Raijin and Issei were from All Japan. The match was terrible and the Philly crowd let the competitors know it when there was "take it home" chants during the match. Otis and Fukimoto got the victory and the crowd chanted "don't come back" as Raijin and Isseli went backstage after the match. The next match was announced as "The Comedy Classic of the summer" but there wasn't really any comedy in the match. It was Jay Lethal v.s. Tracy Smothers but it was somewhat of a handicap match when Z Barr got involved in the match. It seems like Tracy isn't as quick as he used to be in the ring and the match was terrible. Lethal got the win but I and the rest of the crowd weren't too impressed with the match. There was an eight man tag match that featured The Kings of Wrestling and Cheech and Cloudy v.s. Ruckus, Sabian, Ricky Reyes, and B Boy. There was some good action during the match but how many great eight man tag matches have you seen? It was a good match but it could have been a better match considering there were some talented wrestlers in the match. After the slight disappointment with the "comedy classic" there was another unannounced match that was Mickie Knuckles v.s. Rachel Summerlyn in a Falls Count Anywhere match. I'd seen a match online of Mickie in a Tapei death match so I knew before the match began the match would be brutal and it sure was as Mickie and Rachel exchanged several brutal punches. Mickie won the match when she german suplexed Rachel on the ramp way and both women deserve alot of credit for the effort displayed during the match because it was a good match. The next match was a TLC match for the IWA tag team titles. It featured The Iron Saints v.s. Notorious Inc. v.s. The Naptown Dragons. There was too much action during the match to explain all the action but an interesting note to this match was the several times Dr. Wrestling had to move back from the guard rail because many wrestlers were getting thrown into the guard rail. I also had to be on the look out for several flying chairs as well and the was even a guard rail that was knocked over on another section of the crowd during the match. The Iron Saints retained the titles and there were some close calls with the guard rail and flying chairs but Dr. Wrestling survived to see the rest of the show. The next match was a two out of three falls match Human Tornado v.s. Matt Sydal. I have to say I expected alot more from this match and there wasn't really that many aerial moves in the match. There wasn't even really a steady pace during the match and Human Tornado won the match. During intermission there were wrestlers selling merchandise and a few other tables were set up selling tapes and DVDs. I decided to get some bottled water and pop from the concession stand. A funny side note to going back to our seats was that I noticed that some of the tables were selling WWE T shirts and DVDs. I'm not an expert about copy right laws but I'm sure the WWE wouldn't be too happy if they knew there were people selling WWE merchandise at the show..Ha Ha Another funny note during intermission was that there were tables selling WWE,Chikara, CZW, and Japanese DVDs but there wasn't any IWA DVDs for sale at the tables. After intermission it was TNA star Hernandez v.s. Drake Younger and I didn't expect much from this match because Younger is a death match wrestler but it was a good match. Hernandez is a monster and T.V. doesn't do his size justice because during the match he displayed his power throwing Younger around the ring. Hernandez also showed alot of agility during the match with a dive over the ropes and he won the match with a power bomb from the top rope. The IWA title match was Chuck Taylor v.s. Josh Abercrombie and it was a good match that had some good technical wrestling. I'd never heard of Abercrombie but I was impressed with his wrestling ability. Taylor seems like a good heat as he got good heat from the crowd and there were some near falls during the match but Taylor retained the title. The Low Ki/Homicide v.s. Necro Butcher/Toby Klein was a crazy match and there was alot of brawling outside of the ring during the match. Homicide and Necro fought over the guard rail. Homicide was punching Necro about two feet from were I was standing and there was also some wrestling on the ramp way. During the match Low Ki did the ghetto stomp to Nerco through a table and Homicide pinned Klein after a clothesline. The main event was a hardcore rumble and the weapons featured in the match were a barbed wire chair, a thumb tack bat, and a staple gun. It was Vulgar Display of Power v.s. The Devil's Rejects v.s. Six Feet Under v.s. Darrin Childs and Massive. An interesting note to the match was that while a wrestler had the staple gun I offered a dollar bill for them to use and he waved to give him the dollar. I gave the dollar to the camera man, who gave it to the wrestler and he stapled it to another wrestler's head. There were eight wrestlers in the ring and they were all bleeding during the match. It was an INSANE match and Vulgar Display of Power won the match. Overall it was a good show.
