The WWE Wellness Policy
"That's My Story And I'm Sticking To It" Written by: Dr. Wrestling on 9/04/2007

This week for That's My Story and I'm Sticking It It I'll be telling you what I think of WWE suspending atleast ten wrestlers for violating the WWE wellness policy.

I have to say when I read that the WWE was suspending ten wrestlers I was shocked because despite the recent steroid controversy I didn't think the WWE Wellness policy would have an effect on any of the top level talent in the WWE but that doesn't seem to be the case. The whole situation is alittle complex and I apologize if this column is difficult to follow but there are many things that could have led to the super stars being suspended. It was reported that the WWE received information from a DA's office in New York that linked several wrestlers to being prescribed various steroid prescriptions. Now, the WWE has been trying to defend the integrity of it's wellness policy and if a DA's office had proof of wrestlers being distributed steroids then the WWE doesn't really have a choice they have to suspend the talent named because if they don't it will prove the WWE Wellness Policy isn't legitimate. It's been noted that anyone that violates the policy is suspended thirty days for the first violation and obviously this will have an effect on the next few weeks of WWE T.V. but it could also have an effect on the WWE for months. The reason I say this is the WWE might not want a wrestler named in the list of steroid users to be a top name talent because it could give the media more ammunition to use against the WWE.

Some of the names listed are a surprise, while some aren't but it seems like these suspensions will definitely have a major effect on the current WWE storylines. I'll mention a few of those named and give some thoughts on each. Two wrestlers that are currently on the shelf that were named were Edge and Shane Helms. As far as current WWE storylines it won't have any effect because they are both won't be back for months and they might be a few of those named that could have some type of medical reason for what they were prescribed. It's known that some medications are prescribed to help people recover from surgery and it's possible that's what the medications were used for but there's also a possibility that the prescriptions weren't used for a legitimate reason. There's two wrestlers that were named that it doesn't really seem logical that they would have steroids and it doesn't look like they were on steroids. Those two wrestlers are William Regal and Funaki. I've mentioned before that Regal is one of the most underrated and most entertaining wrestlers in the WWE. Regal doesn't look like he's on any type of steroid but who knows? I guess it's possible. It's almost comical to say that Funaki is on steroids because he's been a light weight his entire career. Does Funaki look like he's on steroids? If ANYONE thinks Funaki is on steroids e mail me and please explain the logic of how Funaki could be on steroids. Batista was named and let's be honest here there's really no surprise that Batista is probably on steroids. An interesting question that can be asked about this is does Batista being named in this steroids list have anything to do with him not winning the title at Summer Slam? Did the WWE know that this list would be released? Maybe they did and maybe they didn't but it's certainly interesting that it seems like Batista isn't involved in the main event title picture on Smackdown. Although at this point it doesn't seem like Batista will be suspended so maybe there wasn't proof that he received steroids from an online pharmacy.

John Morrison was suspended and he lost the ECW title to CM Punk. It will be interesting to see what direction ECW goes now that Punk is the champion and Morrison is suspended because for the past few months the Punk/Morrison feud is really the only feud in ECW that has been showcased on PPV. CM Punk is more then capable of carrying the ECW brand but ECW is lacking main event heels so it might be time for a Raw or Smackdown star to switch brands so that there will be a legitimate feud for the ECW title.

Mr. Kennedy was listed in the steroid scandal and after watching Raw it's obvious that Kennedy's major push has been scrapped. As you might know I've said that Kennedy is one of the most entertaining wrestlers in the WWE and he is a future world champion but it's some what disappointing that Kennedy was named as a steroid user because he has claimed in recent interviews that he doesn't take steroids. Maybe Kennedy was framed?! Maybe he was falsely named?! Okay, maybe not but seriously I don't have as much respect for Kennedy as an entertainer because he has said in many recent interviews that he's not on steroids but obviously the New York DA's office has proof that Kennedy is or was on steroids. I still think Kennedy is entertaining and he has a bright future in the WWE but as I said it's disappointing that he's on steroids. When Kennedy returns it will be interesting to see if he still gets a push or if he will be a mid carder.

Umaga, King Booker, Santino Marella, and Chris Masters were also named in the list of wrestlers getting steroids from an online pharmacy. Simon Dean has been fired as a result of his name being mentioned and it's been reported that Eugene has been fired for violating the wellness policy. You might not agree with the suspensions but if the WWE has a policy that doesn't allow wrestlers to take steroids then the wrestlers should follow the rules. It's common sense that wrestlers shouldn't take steroids and even though it's a wrestler's choice to take steroids if the WWE has a policy that doesn't allow steroids then the wrestlers should follow the rules. The overall effect of all of this will only portray not only the WWE but the entire wrestling industry in an even more negative light then it has been in the past few months. With possible congressional meetings about pro wrestling in the next few months it could have a major impact on the pro wrestling industry and it will be interesting to see if it has an impact on pro wrestling.

Until next week
