"That's My Story And I'm Sticking To It" Written by: Dr. Wrestling on 12/23/2007

This week for That's My Story and I'm Sticking To It I'll be telling you what I think of attending Armageddon in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the Mellon Arena.

Before I discuss the PPV, there's a funny story about the drive to the PPV that some might get a laugh from and if anyone seen the weather for the day of the show you know that a major snow storm was making travel of any kind in the north east very difficult. More specifically, Pittsburgh was hit with an ice storm and Dr. Wrestling as well as the wrestling crew I went to the show with aren't exactly the best drivers when it comes to snow so we enlisted the help of a veteran snow traveler, who was able to get us to the show with only a few close calls of sliding on ice. When we arrived at the show we noticed a ridiculously long line that stretched from the building down to the side walk and very similar to when we attended Smackdown, there was only one gate open to enter the building. Now for those that haven't been to the Mellon Arena let's do some simple math here, the Mellon Arena has ten gates to enter the building and no that's not a typing mistake. There's ten possible gates to enter the building and there was only one gate open when we arrived at the Mellon Arena. As a result, even when people started entering the building there was still a wait to get inside and out of the cold weather. Despite the ice and the snow mostly everyone was very understand and there wasn't any type of traffic jam to enter the building. When we were finally able to get inside the building when made our way to our seats and had some time to take pictures of the entrance way and the ring since our seats were close to the Armageddon set.

The dark match was the WWE tag team champions, John Morrison and The Miz v.s. Jesse and Festus. The match itself was very average with nothing notable really happening and Jesse and Festus got the victory. Since there's not much to discuss about the actually match, I'll take a moment to say a few things about each team. John Morrison seems to have a bright future a head of him if he can follow the rules of the WWE Wellness Policy because he has the tools to become an established star. His mic skills aren't the best but he has a good gimmick to work with but it seems the one thing that's working against Morrison is the brand he wrestles for. I don't think anyone can really argue that ECW isn't a joke right now and let's be honest here the brand as a whole is in shambles. My point here is, I think Morrison would have a better chance of being a long term established star in the WWE if he was on Raw or Smackdown because those shows get more viewers and are generally seen as the two most legitimate brands in the WWE. Yes, I know Morrison is one half of the WWE tag champions but the "talent merger" between Smackdown and ECW really showed how weak ECW is in term of star power and neither brand has much of a tag division anyway so Morrison being one half of the WWE tag team champions doesn't exactly do too much for his career. The Miz isn't exactly championship material and I don't really see the logic of him being a champion because let's be honest here, who wants to see The Miz wrestle? Despite developing a heel character, he's a very average heel at best and I doubt he will be anything more then just a mid carder. Jesse and Festus are still on the fence in terms of being a legitimate tag team on Smackdown. It seems like they haven't really been identified as either a tag team with a terrible gimmick or a comedy tag team. They are okay in the ring and Festus has had some funny spots during matches but the team seems very one dimensional when it comes to building storylines so it seems as though only time will tell if the team will be successful on Smackdown.

The opening match of the PPV was Rey Mysterio v.s. MVP for the United States title and I have to say I expected more from the match. Don't get more wrong here, It wasn't a bad match but it wasn't a good match either. Rey missed a few spots but had a few innovative ones too. What ruined the match was the DQ ending and I can't disagree more with the WWE's decision to have a title match on PPV to end in a count out. I mean if there's no winner what's the point of the match? What's the point of people paying $40 to watch the pay per view? People order the PPV to see who is going to win and when the WWE doesn't have a finish to a match on PPV it basically robs the people of what they paid to see. I know the WWE probably didn't want Rey to look weak but they could have had MVP to a short cut to get the win instead of having a count out to the match. As I said, I think the Rey/MVP feud is just to keep MVP busy until Matt Hardy returns but at this point the WWE needs to do something to add some fuel to MVP's run as U.S. champion because it's becoming very stale at this point so maybe some solid matches with Rey can give MVP some more steam until Hardy returns. As for Rey, I hope the WWE has enough sense to get him into something more then just a transitional feud because he should be atleast in a featured feud on Smackdown, if not a main event feud. As far as the main event feuds go, I think an Edge/Rey feud could be a really good feud because it would have one of Smackdown's top "good guys" wrestling Smackdown's top heel.

The CM Punk and Kane v.s. Big V and Mark Henry was the terrible match I expected it to be and Punk getting pinned doesn't exactly help the credibility of his title run or the ECW title itself. Big V and Mark Henry really have nothing to offer to the WWE on any brand at this point and you have to wonder why either of them still have a job. Both of them have had more then one failed push in the WWE so there's really not much someone can say to dispute how terrible some of their matches are. Mabel was the 1995 King of The Ring and it's known as one of the worst King of The Rings in WWE history. Viscera wrestling in pajamas didn't go much further then internet Velocity so now there's Big V getting a major push in ECW. Mark Henry has been in the WWE for over ten years and the fans have just never really bought into him as a main event star despite the numerous times the WWE tries to push him, which is why he's disappeared from T.V. many times just to return to get another push. CM Punk is doing the best he can with his title run but as I said ECW as a whole is a joke so you can't expect too much from his run as ECW champion. I've said it before and I'll say it again Kane is one of the most under rated and under used wrestlers in the WWE but Kane isn't the only one not getting a chance. Elijah Burke and Shelton Benjamin are two other that despite how good they are in the ring, they just doesn't get the solid push they deserve in ECW.

I was surprised that Mr. Kennedy v.s. Shawn Micheals was the third match on the card but it was probably the match of the night. The back and fourth action really had the crowd into the match but I have to say that I was disappoint that Kennedy didn't get the win. I have to ask, is Kennedy ever going to get a win? It seems as though he'll win against a jobber such as Marty Jennetty every once and a while but he doesn't win any of the main matches during a feud, He's jobbed to both Batista and Lashley more times then anyone can count as well as The Undertaker, Jeff Hardy, and even Super Crazy was a win over Mr. Kennedy. It just doesn't make sense that the WWE would have one of their best young wrestlers be portrayed as somewhat of a glorified jobber, which is what Kennedy's career seems to currently consist of at this point on Raw. He's feuded with many major names in the WWE but he hasn't really won any PPV matches against them. I think the Kennedy/HBK feud will probably continue because there's already a number one contender so there's not much else for HBK to do at the moment.

Triple H v.s. Jeff Hardy was a good match and it was definitely it was a surprise that Hardy actually won the match but even being the number one contender, it's obvious that Hardy won't win the WWE title because he's already the IC champion. That and we all know a spot in the main event of Wrestlemania is reserved for Triple H because he's a part of the McMahon family tree. As I've said before, Triple H is a great wrestler but he shouldn't main event every Wrestlemania. Hardy as really stepped up his game since returning to the WWE and he's really improved in the ring. He went from a wrestler that couldn't have a good match without a ladder to one of the top wrestlers on the Raw roster. He's really used his skills to put together some great matches that get the crowd to follow a story during a match instead of just one spot in a match. It's great that Hardy has gotten a main event spot and hopefully he will be in the main event picture for more then just one PPV because he's as over with the crowd as anyone on the Raw roster. I expect a great match from Hardy against Orton at the Royal Rumble and as I said hopefully he will remain in the title picture for atleast a few PPVs because he definitely has the fan base to be a main event star.

The Great Khali v.s. Finlay was the epic match I expected it to be and as I thought it was the point in the show where I went to get a $4 pop but fortunately or maybe unfortunately I only missed part of the match so I was able to see Finlay win the match. The only thing I can really say about this match was atleast they kept it short because nobody wants to see a thirty minute Khali classic or more specifically any Great Khali match.

It didn't really make sense that the WWE title match was before the Women's title match and I know something goofy was probably going to happen. I was right because the match ended in a DQ and the reason the WWE didn't have the Jericho/Orton match main event the show is because they wanted to send the fans home with a winner to end the PPV. The match itself was a good match and it proved Jericho is still over with the fans because when he had Orton in the Walls of Jericho it was probably the loudest pop of the night but the ending was terrible. As I said earlier in the column, I can't disagree more with matches at a PPV not having a winner because people pay to see winners. I can't say I expect too much from JBL's return and he should probably stay retired. I'll give him credit for making something out of his title run but it was obvious especially during the end of his run as an in ring competitor that he should retire. It seems as though at this point the only place JBL should be in the WWE is as a commentator. That being said, JBL deserves alot of credit for his skills an an announcer as well because he's reinvented the role of a heel announcer. The bottom line here is JBL shouldn't get back in the ring and even being in the ring with someone as good as Jericho won't help JBL's return. Hopefully after the JBL/Jericho feud JBL will be back as a commentator because as I said he's a great heel commentator and he adds alot to Smackdown.

The Women's title match was a good match but it wasn't given nearly enough time it should have had to develop into the great match it could have been. I think the feud should continue because Mickie James and Beth Phoenix could really have some great matches.

The World Heavy Weight title match was a good match and Edge is the new champion but what's the point of having The Major Brothers involved? I understand that the WWE might be trying to push The Major Brothers but it doesn't really make sense to have basically a jobber tag team being in a stable with the World Heavy Weight champion. I mean The Major Brother have done literally nothing on Smackdown and now people are supposed to buy that they are in a stable with the champion? What have they done to prove that they are worth being in a stable with the champion? I'm not saying the push won't be successful but The Major Brothers have done absolutely nothing to prove they can become established stars. The Major Brothers' current push reminds me alot of Matt Morgan's and Nathan Jones' push when they were both in a stable with Brock Lesnar. We know how much that push worked for Morgan and Jones so that could indicate how successful The Major Brothers will be as a result of their current push in a stable with Edge. It just doesn't seem like The Major Brothers are ready for a major push and it might have made more sense for the WWE to push them in the tag division before there were put in a stable with the champion but then again not much of what the WWE does makes sense.

Overall I think Armageddon was an okay PPV.

Merry Christmas

Until next week
