WWE's Industry news
"That's My Story And I'm Sticking To It" Written by: Dr. Wrestling on 3/05/2008
This week for That's My Story and I'm Sticking To It I'll be telling you what I think of the "Industry news" section on WWE.com. I was reading some wrestling rumor sites as usual just to see if there was any new backstage news when I came across an article that reported that WWE.com was advertising TNA's Lockdown pay per view in the new "industry news" section on the site. It didn't make too much sense that WWE would plug their "competition" on their website but I decided to check it out anyway and sure enough ticket information for Lockdown was listed on the site. The internet, as it does with almost everything about wrestling has made more out of the story then it probably is but it's an interesting question, why would the WWE advertise other promotions on their website? The answer could be simpler then you think. I have to say, it seems that the WWE advertising Lockdown isn't an attempt to help TNA but rather a way to mock them. In a way it could be perceived as the WWE saying "hey we can plug your shows on our site and you still won't draw more fans." Weather it actually does or not remains to be seen but it seems more of a way for the WWE to try to send a message that they are the superior company then free promotion for TNA. The reason I say that it's more of a way to mock TNA is because TNA has down several things over the past few years to try to mock the WWE including parodies of Triple H and Vince McMahon, VKM declaring "war" on Vince McMahon, and Rhino supposedly burning the original ECW title just to mention a few things. Either way, I'm sure TNA doesn't mind the free promotion. The Ring Of Honor PPV "Rising Above", which debuts this friday was also advertised but I view WWE's reasoning for this vastly different then why they advertised TNA. The ROH article lists the wrestlers appearing on the pay per view but the TNA article doesn't not list any wrestlers just the event information and that may be an indication as to why WWE has chose to promote other promotions. I think the WWE is promoting Ring Of Honor for the same reason they helped promote ECW's Barely Legal PPV in 1997 and that's because it helps they overall wrestling business. Ring Of Honor won't ever draw 10,000 fans or even 5,000 fans and WWE knows it. Even ROH knows they have a limited market because it many ways that's the type of company it's designed to be, which isn't a bad thing at all. In fact it's great that ROH is on PPV to offer a different style of wrestling and WWE knows it's good for the wrestling business as a whole to try to get ROH a few more PPV buys. It also benefits WWE if ROH continues as a company because in many ways ROH has and probably will continue to be a feeder system so to speak for the WWE. CM Punk, who is one of the WWE's main stars made his name in ROH as did WWE developmental wrestlers Colt Cabana and Matt Sydal so that shows that ROH producing more stars is good for the wrestling business. I wouldn't expect to see any backstage dirt posted on WWE.com though or anything that would portray WWE in a negative light. You probably won't be reading about the next time Randy Orton decides to trash a hotel room or when Triple H wants to have yet another time run so other then the advertising of other promotions I wouldn't expect to see too much "insider" news posted on WWE.com. The most important thing to know when reading articles on wrestling rumor sites is that they are probably just rumors but anything can happen in the world of professional wrestling.
