This week for That's My Story and I'm Sticking To It I'll be telling you who I think the winners will be at Night Of Champions.
Before discussing the winners, there's a few things I want to mention about the card itself. Night of Champions, where every match is a title match seems to be a good concept in theory but I have to say the under card on paper at least seems very lack luster. It's also interesting to note that the IC title isn't being defended but it would seem that it's being defended on the show to further the storyline of HBK/Jericho, which has been a very solid storyline. It should also be mentioned that the draft this past week on Raw should be an indication that at least one of the main event titles will probably switch shows because it wouldn't make sense to have both the WWE and World Heavy Weight title on Smackdown. Now, let's get to some picks for the winners.
The Women's title match should be decent but I don't expect a title change anytime soon. While Katie Lea has been given a push in the past few weeks to try to establish her and Paul Burchil, she hasn't really been pushed as a wrestler but rather as Burchil's manager so that's why I don't see her winning the Women's title, at least not at this point. Mickie James has done well as champion and I would think that considering her success that the WWE will have her remain the Women's champion for a few more months. Mickie and Beth Phoenix had some great matches during their recent feud so it would be cool to see a few more Mickie/Phoenix matches for the title. While on the topic of women's wrestling, it had been mentioned on Smackdown the past few weeks about a "Diva champion," which would be the women's title for Smackdown but as of this writing WWE.com has nothing listed about the match for the Night Of Champions PPV.
The WWE tag title match is a joke and I'm not going to take too much time to discuss it. The Miz and John Morrison are the champions and they've had a long run as champions but despite that their run has been less then memorable, due mostly to the fact that they haven't really been any long term feud for the titles during their reign. As for a winner, I'll pick Finlay and Hornswoggle but that's just a guess, not a solid prediction. Hornswoggle was the Cruiser Weight champion so why not make him a tag team champion? The Finlay/Hornswoggle duo provide some funny moments but you have to wonder if teaming with a leprechaun is the best the WWE creative can come up with for a great technical wrestler like Finlay to do on WWE T.V.? One of the reasons I wouldn't be too surprised if there's new tag champions at the PPV is because it would give an opportunity for Morrison to get another chance on his own, which is something the WWE was pushing him for before he was suspended several months ago. If Finlay and Hornswoggle do in fact win the tag belts, it will either be a short run or the titles will become a joke. Anyone know what happened to tag team wrestling?
The U.S. title match seems to be the start of a new feud with Matt Hardy now in ECW and Chavo challenging for the title. It's obvious that Hardy will keep the belt but as I said this will probably be the start of a new feud, which could help push Hardy as champion. As for the match, it will probably be decent but you can't really expect too much from Chavo. Despite his upper mid card spot in recent months I'm not too impressed with Chavo. Maybe the reason he doesn't have any credibility as a legitimate star is that WCW had him ride around a wooden horse years ago? Or could it be that his greatest accomplishments in his career involved him riding the coat tails of Eddie or Rey? Don't get me wrong here, I'm not trying to burying Chavo. He's solid in terms of in ring ability but he doesn't really have the mic skills or the charisma to be anything more then an average wrestler at best. Either way I'm expect to see Matt Hardy v.s. Chavo at the next PPV.
I have to be honest here, I could really care less about the ECW title match and it's probably going to be a train wreck. You have The Big Show, who has been sloppy in the ring his entire career. The you have Mark Henry, who has been sloppy his whole career and despite numerous pushes during his WWE career he still can't get over with the fans. Kane finally has a world title and he deserves it. He really isn't given enough credit for all that he's accomplished in his career and his skill in the ring. I'll pick Kane to retain the title simply because I think Big Show or Mark Henry would be terrible as ECW champion.
The World tag team title match should be interesting as it's Cody Rhodes and Hardcore Holly v.s. Ted Debise and a mystery partner. There's been rumors that a second generation stable could be starting in the WWE and this could be the start of the stable. Deuce, who is actually the son on WWE Hall of Famer, Jimmy "Super Fly" Snuka was drafted to Raw so when you consider that information I would say it would be fair to guess that Debise and Deuce will be challenging for the tag titles. I think a second generation tag team has the potential to be successful but I hope the WWE takes the time to build them up instead of giving them the tag titles right at the start. The reason I say this is because when a wrestler or team starts at the top of a particular division what is the only direction to go from there? Even though I think the new team should be built up, I will predict that they win the tag titles at the PPV.
While the under card of the PPV is somewhat underwhelming, the main events are very interesting and it's very tough to pick a winner for those matches, which is rare for most WWE main event matches. I'm pretty sure that either the WWE or World Heavy Weight title will change hands so that each show will have a main event title but I really don't know which title it will be. Batista is challenging Edge and with Batista now on Raw, it's possible that he could win the title but when you consider the wrestlers involved in the main events, Batista has to be seem as the weakest competitor in terms of being a legitimate main event star. That's why I will pick Edge to retain the title but that's more of a guess then a solid prediction.
For once I'm actually looking forward to a main event match that involves Triple H and I would expect the WWE title match to be a great match. John Cena and Triple H work really well together and they tell a great story during the course of their matches. I was there live in Chicago when these two wrestled for the WWE title and the electricity in the crowd was insane. They had the entire audience following their every move and it was a great back and fourth match. I really have no idea who is going to win the match but I will guess that John Cena will win the WWE title.
Overall I think Night of Champions will be a good PPV.
Until next week
