The Road to Wrestlemania

This week for That's My Story and I'm Sticking To It I'll be telling you what I think of the road to Wrestlemania. After watching No Way Out, it seems as though the wheels are now set in motion to start to the road to Wrestlemania XXIV and atleast the early line up to the card looks great. A few things should be noted before discussing the current storylines heading into Wrestlemania. Rey Mysterio has torn his bicep as was noted on WWE T.V. and as a result he will miss Wrestlemania, atleast as far as in ring action goes. It's also been reported that Hulk Hogan is trying to get himself a spot on the card, saying in a recent interview he should wrestle Ric Flair in a "career v.s. career" match and while it might sound like a decent match on paper, let's be honest here, this is just a lame attempt from Hogan to try to prove he can still draw but in reality he knows that Wrestlemania will be successful without him on the card. Don't get me wrong here, Hogan can still draw money but it's not necessary for him to be on the card for the show to be a successful draw because Wrestlemania sells itself just based on the Wrestlemania name. As far as Hogan's suggestion for a match v.s. Flair, I have to say Flair deserves a better opponent who can actually wrestle because Hogan might be a great in ring performer but he is terrible when it comes to any type of actual wrestling ability. I don't think Hogan needs or should be on the card and it doesn't look like the WWE is going to book Hogan anyway so maybe Hogan should focus on his supposed wrestling project that is being produced with Eric Bischoff. Now let's discuss some storylines on the road to Wrestlemania. On Raw this past week both Mr. Kennedy...Kennedy and Jeff Hardy qualified for The Money in The Bank Ladder match, which gives the winner a title shot. I know there will be others that qualify for a spot in the match but I think one of the winners has already qualified because I expect either Mr. Kennedy or Jeff Hardy to win at Wrestlemania. Kennedy, who originally claimed he would cash in the title shot at Wrestlemania XXIV was pinned in a match against Edge when it was thought he would miss six months of action because of an injury but he returned to the ring in six weeks after it was determined the injury was not as severe as suspected. Kennedy could quite possibly win The Money in The Bank again and as I've said many times Mr. Kennedy is a future world champion in the WWE. Jeff Hardy has a good chance at winning because it would be a way to keep in the main event picture after his successful push in recent months when he showed that he deserves to be a main event star. That being said, Hardy also deserves alot of credit for really improving since returning to the WWE because Hardy at one time needed a ladder to have a good match but since his return he has become a good overall wrestler that can tell a great story during the course of a match. A side note to The Money in The Bank ladder match is Shelton Benjamin qualified for the match this past week on Smackdown defeating Jimmy Wang Yang and although I don't expect Shelton to win a title shot at this point, it's almost a given that he will display some amazing moves at Wrestlemania. It was also announced this past week on Raw that "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair will be inducted to the WWE Hall of Fame and it goes without saying that Flair should be in the Hall of Fame. Flair is the definition of a hall of famer and he is a true legend. That being said, I think Shawn Micheals announcing Flair will be inducted into the hall of fame is a possible clue that he could be Flair's opponent at Wresltemania. If HBK is in fact Flair's opponent it will be a great choice and I'd expect a classic match. It will be interesting to see who inducts Flair into the hall of fame and it's possible it could be Arn Anderson but that's just a guess because Flair is the standard in pro wrestling so many wrestlers have been influence's by Flair's career, such as Triple H, who is another possibility as someone that could induct Flair into the hall of fame. The Big Show returned to the WWE at No Way Out and wasted no time making an impact when he attacked an injured Rey Mysterio after a World Heavy Weight title match. The attack prompted Floyd "Money" Mayweather to jump the security wall and make his way into the ring to defend Rey from further injury. After a stare down, Floyd hit The Big Show with some stiff punches, which caused Big Show to bleed from the mouth and Big Show also got a broken nose as a result of Floyd's punches. To follow up on the storyline, this past week on Raw a future match was set up between Big Show and Mayweather and one can only assume that the match will take place at Wrestlemania. I've never been too impressed with The Big Show but he appears to be in better shape so maybe his matches won't be as terrible this time around with his current WWE run. As far as Mayweather goes, there's no doubt he's one of, if not the most talented boxer in the sports world today but you have to ask exactly how effective will Mayweather be in a WWE ring? Another question regarding this match is what type of match will it be? Although I don't think it will be a classic match, Floyd will definitely be entertaining during his run in the WWE. The match will probably generate some publicity for Wrestlemania, which is really all the match is probably designed to do because I don't think anyone in the WWE is expecting The Big Show v.s. Mayweather to be a thirty minute classic but it should be an interesting match that brings spectacle to Wrestlemania, which is what the event has been about for years. At No Way Out, The Undertaker won the Smackdown Elimination Chamber match to become the number one contender for the World Heavy Weight title and wrestle Edge at Wrestlemania. The Undertaker is really the only logical choice to wrestle Edge for the title at this point because with Smackdown lacking major star power, The Undertaker v.s. Edge is probably the best Smackdown main event the WWE could book for Wrestlemania. Now don't get me wrong here, The Undertaker v.s. Edge should be a great match that is Wrestlemania worthy but the point is, it's really the only major title match the WWE could book for Wrestlemania. That being said, I think the undefeated streak v.s. undefeated streak is a great storyline for the match that will add alot to the match but as I've said before I think The Undertaker should remain undefeated at Wrestlemania so it will be interesting to see if he wins the title. A side note to the Smackdown Elimination Chamber is that the match was about fourty five minutes when it probably should have been about twenty minutes because the match really slowed down the pace of the PPV and drained alot of the anticipation from the show. The Raw Elimination Chamber match was alot better in my opinion but it really wasn't a surprise that Triple H got his spot in the main event of Wrestlemania because let's be honest here, we all know that Triple H has his spot reserved in the main event, which is why I've said in past columns that it's obvious that Triple H will be main eventing Wrestlemania. On Raw John Cena earned his spot in the match when he pinned Orton in a non title match and with Cena added to the match it's now a triple threat match for the WWE title. That being said, I think Cena v.s. Triple H or Cena v.s. Orton would be a better main event then a triple threat match but if the WWE wouldn't have included Orton in the match it could have made his title reign look weak, considering he won the title because Cena got injured and basically only had the title until Cena returned. It would make it seem as though Orton is the champion only because Cena was injured instead of actually being a legitimate champion. It will be interesting to see how the match builds to lead to Wrestlemania.
