Who will win at Wrestlemania?
"That's My Story And I'm Sticking To It" Written by: Dr. Wrestling on 3/30/2008
This week for That's My Story and I'm Sticking To It I'll be telling you who I think the winners will be at Wrestlemania. The showcase of the immortals, the grandest stage of them all, and any other tag line they've used to promote the biggest show of the year in pro wrestling. This is Wrestlemania and without question it's the event where eras in pro wrestling can be defined. It's an epic event and it will only cost $50-$60 to watch it. Okay, all epic Wrestlemania references aside it's crazy how much it cost to watch the show but I guess it's all for "the prosperity of pro wrestling." Hey, that's catchy maybe it will be the tag line for Wrestlemania next year? Ha Ha Before I discuss the details of the actual card, I think it's worth mentioning that Wrestlemania seems to lack build up for some of the matches. It could be the recylced storylines or the lack of emphasis on some of the matches but it just doesn't seem to have the stacked card you would expect from a Wrestlemania. Let's start with the least important and the least cared about match, the ECW title. There will be a twenty four man battle royal, which I think will take place before the actual PPV broadcast starts and then later in the night the winner will challenge ECW champion, Chavo Guerrero for the title. Since there's a possibility of twenty four challengers I will take some time to discuss the status of the ECW brand instead of the title match. It has to be said that the "ECW" brand is ECW in letters only but that's something that's been blatantly obvious since the relaunch of the brand in June 2006. If it's ECW in letters only then why call it ECW? Why not just create another brand with a name similar to Raw or Smackdown? Your guess is as good as mine in this case but if I had to suggest a reason I would expect that it was Vince McMahon's attempt to destroy the legacy of ECW and sour people on the letters ECW. It could also be McMahon's way to display the power he has or thinks he has over the wrestling industry as he tries to force the fans to accept his idea of "extreme." On the flip side, it's given some of the young talent, who have been overlooked or who are trying to get an opportunity to display there skills. A great example of this was a match from the ECW T.V. show this past week when it was Carlito v.s. Shelton Benjamin in a great match. Kofi Kingston, who is very entertaining is also an example that the ECW brand can provide an opportunity to the younger talent and he has a bright future in the WWE. As far as Chavo as champion, I think he is a mediocre champion and he title reign is also very mediocre. With underused stars such as Shelton Benjamin and Kane on the roster you have to wonder why the WWE has Chavo be the ECW champion when in reality he qualifies as a mid carder at best but it's possible that there could be a new ECW champion at Wrestlemania. The Belfast Brawl might surprise a few people because although I have my doubts about JBL's in ring ability or lack there of I think JBL and Finlay could have a brutal match that could end up being atleast a decent match if not a good match. It will also be interesting to see if Hornswoggle makes an appearance during the match because he is the focal point of the feud but the attack by JBL could have been a way to write Hornswoggle out of the storyline. As far as Finlay goes, it will be interesting to see what direction his character goes after Wrestlemania because if he stays a "good guy" it might be a wise decision to have Hornswoggle along with Finlay because to the surprise of many the little feller is one of the most over wrestlers on the Raw roster. I think it would be fair to call Hornswoggle a wrestler considering all of his classic matches with The Great Khali...Ha Ha Anyway I have to say that even though JBL isn't the most technically sound wrestler in the WWE and I don't think he should have returned to the ring, he is a great in ring performer. His great mic skills are what made him a star and that's something he deserves alot of credit for because he went from a mid carder to a star when he established the JBL character. It's tough to pick a winner in this one but I'll predict Finlay will get the victory. Before I discuss the Bunny Mania match and the competitors I'd like to take a minute to mention that if you haven't noticed (depending on how many promotions you watch) women's wrestling in almost every major promotions is and has been very solid recently. The WWE's once non existent Women's division has been great the past several months with Melina, Beth Phoenix, Candice Michelle, Mickie James, and even Maria all having great matches. TNA also has it's share of good women's wrestlers and if you haven't seen any "knockout" division matches, you should watch an episode of Impact. Former WWE Women's Champion, Gail Kim has been a stand out in the "Knockout" division was the first TNA Knockout champion. Awesome Kong, who is the current Knockout champion has wrestled in Japan and brings a style rarely seen in Women's wrestling in the United States to the Knockout division. OMB, Velvet Sky, and Jackie Moore are also some good women wrestlers on the TNA roster. It should be noted that Candice Michelle was originally supposed to be in the match but was injured so Ashley has replaced her as Maria's partner and Candice Michelle is expected to be out of action. Snoop Dogg is supposed to have a role in the match and I expect Snoop to add some unique entertainment to the match. As for a winner, I'll pick Ashley and Maria because it will be another way to promote Maria's appearance in Playboy magazine. It's obvious that Batista will win the Raw v.s. Smackdown match because it seems that the WWE is going to attempt to use some reverse pyscholoy so to speak with this match and try to portray Smackdown as the better brand based on only the outcome of the match but let's be honest here will all know Raw has been and probably always will be the top show for the WWE. WWE's logic is that if Batista wins it will atleast make the bands seem equal atleast to some fans and it might work but most fans know that Raw has better storylines, more star power, and an overall better show. The top three stars on Smackdown are The Undertaker, Edge, and Rey Mysterio but with Rey injured, you can do the math on how the WWE decided on Smackdown's main event for Wrestlemania. That's not to say The Undertaker/Edge match isn't Wrestlemania worthy but the point being Smackdown's roster is lacking depth in terms of top tier stars, Since the winner of the match is fairly obvious, I'll explain what you will see from Batista in the match. Punch, kick, clothesline, spine buster, and a Batista bomb. That's worth $50 isn't it? The Money in The Bank has the potential to steal the show and it features some of the WWE's best talent. Let's take a second to discuss the wrestlers in the match as well as there current status in the WWE. John Morrison is a former ECW champion and a current WWE tag team champion but those two particular titles don't mean too much in the WWE today especially the WWE tag team titles. Titles aside, Morrison is solid in the ring and he has alot of talent. CM Punk is probably the WWE's brightest young star so hopefully he will be a champion in the near future because he has the skill to be a champion and he deserves a top spot in the WWE. Carlito was close to exiting the WWE at one point and despite the WWE not doing too much to help his career Carlito remains one of the best young stars in the WWE. The Carlito/Santio combination is great and has provided some really entertaining so hopefully they will have a run as tag team champions. When you talk about Shelton Benjamin there's really only two things that you can continually say because the WWE doesn't do anything with his career. Those two things are that he is the most under ratted and underused wrestling in the WWE. He's got amazing athletic ability and wrestling skill but the WWE doesn't push him. The United States champion, MVP is in the match but I have to say it's time for MVP to lose the title. I know the WWE is probably waiting for Matt Hardy to return to the ring but it makes the title seem less important when MVP hasn't defended the title in months. MVP's title run and his character in some ways is stale. The reason I say the MVP character is stale is because the WWE has had MVP do nothing important in months with the same gimmick, which could be a great gimmick if the WWE used it right. Chris Jericho recently was the IC title from Jeff Hardy and I think Jericho could use a solid run as the IC champion because his return to the WWE fell flat when he was pushed into the WWE title picture and then didn't win the title. Jericho could reestablish himself in the WWE as the IC champion and it will be interesting to see what type of run he has as the IC champion. Mr. Kennedy is in the match and I think he will repeat his success in the Money in The Bank Ladder match to win a title shot. A few weeks ago on Raw there was a backstage promo with Kennedy and Randy Orton where Kennedy said if he wins the Money in the Bank Ladder match he will cash in the title shot at Wrestlemania. If Kennedy does win the Money in The Bank ladder match it will set up an interesting scenario with the anticipation of if he will cash in the title shot later in the night but even if he does get a title shot I don't expect him to win the title. I'm not going to spend too much time discussing the Big Show/Floyd Mayweather match because quite frankly I think it will be a terrible match. I know the point of the match is to get publicity for the WWE, which is has but if you consider pro wrestling history, wrestler v.s. boxer matches aren't ranked as all time classics. In fact, Muhammad Ali v.s. Antoni Inkoi is known for being a less then great match. As for a winner, I don't really care who wins this one but I'll pick Mayweather simply because I find it hard to believe that Mayweather would agree to be apart of Wrestlemania if he was going to lose a match so I'd expect Mayweather to win the match. The World Heavy Weight title match features Edge v.s. The Undertaker and while I think the match will have some good in ring action, I have to say it's alittle stale that the WWE is recycling the "undefeated streak v.s. the title" storyline from last year. That being said, if the WWE has any sense at all they will have The Undertaker remain undefeated at Wrestlemania because as I've said 15-0 at Wrestlemania is something that should remain apart of pro wrestling history. Where the WWE goes after Wrestlemania is anyone's guess because Edge and The Undertaker are the only two main event wrestlers on Smackdown at this point. Something I have to say about Edge's title run is while it's well deserves, as Edge is a top heel in the WWE, I just don't think the Edge/Vickie Guerrero has really been an effective storyline and I guess it's because of the lack of logic to it. Another thing is the WWE has tried to push Vickie as a heel on T.V. but making a window a heel just doesn't seem to make sense, which is why I don't think the heel Vickie Guerrero character has been effective on Smackdown. I'll pick to win the title and I'd expect Edge to stay in the title picture because of the lack of main event wrestlers on Smackdown. I'm not looking forward to the WWE title match for a few various reasons. First of all, for years the winner and just the winner of the Royal Rumble would get a shot at the title and now it seems that no matter what atleast one other wrestler finds a way in the same match so how important is it really to win the Rumble? Now I understand with two main event titles, the WWE title and the World Heavy Weight title the WWE has to book another title match at Wrestlemania without the winner of the Rumble but my point is Cena won the Rumble but somehow Triple H is in the match too. Whatever happened to a one on one match at Wrestlemania? It seems as though the past few years the WWE has found a way not to follow the traditional format of Wrestlemania and while there have been some good triple threat matches in the past, there's also been a few lack luster triple threat matches in the WWE. In a triple threat it's hard to set a pace for the match and sometimes the match consist of each wrestler taking turns getting thrown outside the ring. I guess it doesn't help matters that I'm not a fan of Triple H or Randy Orton but for two very different reasons. Orton seems over hyped and some what overrated. It doesn't really help the situation that the only real reason Orton won the title was that Cena was injured. As I've said many times before the ONLY reason Triple H has a spot reserved in the main event of Wrestlemania every year is because he's apart of the McMahon family tree. Once again as I've said before don't get me wrong here, Triple H is a great wrestler but he's not on the same level as The Rock or Stone Cold and he's not on the level to many event Wrestlemania every year. As far as a winner, I guess you can do the math on who I'd like to see win the match and that's why I'll pick Cena to win the title but I wouldn't be surprised at all if Triple H wins the title. The reason I'm discussing the Flair/HBK match last is because I think it should main event the show and I know it probably won't be the main event but it definitely should be the main event of the show. I mean how many times does the greatest in ring performer retire? Flair's career and the build up to the match are more then worthy of being a Wrestlemania main event. Flair's promo on Raw really took the intensity of the match to another level and I expect the match to be a classic match. It's obvious that HBK will win the match and Flair will retire but it's Flair's night. Although Flair will be done as an in ring wrestler I wouldn't be too surprised if he had some other role in the WWE and hopefully he will continue to entertain the fans even though he won't be wrestling. Here's a tribute to Flair WOOOOOOOOOO! To wrap up this column I will say I hope everyone that is watching the show enjoys the show and gets their money's worth. Now get some food, some pop, and watch Wrestlemania! Until next week That's My Story and I'm Sticking To It Dr. Wrestling If you have comments or questions e mail me drwrestlingallpro@yahoo.com
