The Octagon Rules: 2-7-06
"The Octagon Rules" Written by: Scott X on 2/07/2007

Mirko Cro Cop's debut in the octagon was sick. As Cro Cop's strikes were lightning fast, he dominated Eddie Sanchez, who simply couldn't get close to him to take him down. A high kick to the top of Sanchez' head stunned the fighter and after a few more strikes, Sanchez hit the ground where Cro Cop finished him with a furious ground and pound attack. Canada.com reports that Cro Cop took home $350,000 for the fight, however, $105,000 went to foreign tax.

With these lighter heavyweights in the division, it seems that the days of the slow, lumbering, heavies will soon disappear, as fighters like Cro Cop, Brandon Vera, and Andrei Arlovski, look to create more and more excitement in the weight class. Until now, Vera looked like the guy who would challenge Sylvia for the belt. It looks now like Cro Cop is going to get the title shot first. Vera did issue a challenge to Chuck Liddell a while back. Hell Dana, how bout Cro Cop vs. Vera for a shot at Sylvia's belt? No offense to Randy Couture, but how the hell is he gonna take the Maine-Iac down?

When I found out that Travis Lutter didn't make weight on his second try (187 and 186.5 lbs.), I couldn't believe it. Big let down for all fight fans, especially those who followed TUF 4. This was a guy who dominated the show and destroyed Patrick Cote at the finale, ultimately finishing him in the first round with an arm bar. Watching him walk to the octagon in UFC 67, and during the ring introductions, Lutter looked absolutely dejected. He looked like he didn't want to be there. All that aside, the guy was winning the fight up to the point he tapped in the 2nd. He took down Silva, advanced his position, remained on top for most of the time (Silva won from the bottom), and kept Silva's striking attack to a minimum. Silva gets credit for getting out of the mounted position in the 1st and surviving on the ground, but that 1st round was mainly controlled by Lutter. At any rate, I think that the fight was still exciting, even though it was non-title, but you have to give it to Lutter, despite the weight mess-up, he took Anderson Silva to the limit, proving how great both fighters are. I hope to see Lutter again in the UFC, and if he has another title shot.... HEY, GOOBER, MAKE WEIGHT!!!!!!!
