"The Octagon Rules" Written by: Scott X on 2/19/2007

Bodog’s coverage of Mixed Fighting Championship on ION television is the newest televised MMA show, from St. Petersburg, Russia, consisting of 9 events which started on February 13 and will continue until April 10, culminating on April 14 at a Pay Per View event which will feature Fedor Emelianenko (PRIDE) v. Matt Lindland (UFC). Each week, a different weight class will have its bouts to determine who in that weight class will move on to fight for its respective championship. The great thing about this is that if you miss the fights on TV, you can go to bodogfight.com and download them. If you don’t want to, here are some results… Rodrigo Damm (BJJ) who won his last 3 fights by submission defeated Kultar “Black Mamba” Gill (Pankration) by… submission (rear naked choke). Despite Gill holding the ropes many times to avoid a takedown (which led to Damm throwing Gill out of the ring!!!) Damm ultimately submitted him in the 2nd round. He will face American Top Team member Mike Thomas Brown for the lightweight championship, who defeated former UFC veteran Yves Edwards by decision.

As for the Elite Extreme Combat main event where Frank Shamrock fought Renzo Gracie recently on Showtime, well, it was pretty bad. Gracie controlled the whole fight by taking Shamrock down repeatedly and keeping him down, but was unable to capitalize as Herb Dean stood them up a few times. Then in the 2nd round, Gracie took Shamrock down again, only this time, Shamrock was able to get his left leg free and knee Renzo twice in the back of the head from the bottom, which DQ’d Shamrock due to Renzo’s inability to continue. In Shamrock’s post fight interview, he did apologize but pretty much shrugged the knees of as if they were nothing. Sad ending to a boring fight. Bottom line, Dean should have stood them up quicker as Gracie was doing nothing from the top and Shamrock should play by the rules… as Gracie could have easily driven the point of his elbow into Shamrock’s face Dan Severn style.

On another note, Sherdog.com reports that UFC Heavyweight fighter Brandon “The Truth” Vera was in attendance at the EXC Shamrock v. Gracie event. No word yet on Vera jumping to EXC as Vera is slated to fight “Irish” Jake O’Brien next in the UFC. O’Brien (wrestling) has won his last 3 fights, the latest against Heath Herring by unanimous decision. Vera (kickboxing) has won all 8 of his professional MMA fights, 6 by either TKO or KO, one by submission and one by decision… and he TKO’d Frank Mir in the 1st round back in November.
