Glorified ignorance
"The Octagon Rules" Written by: Scott X on 5/04/2007

Co-hosts Michael Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser bashed the UFC in last wednesday's episode of Pardon the Interruption.

When addressing the thought that many young athletes are going into other sports besides boxing, Michael Wilbon stated, “Well, but they [young athletes] go into UFC, and that’s like bare-knuckles. That’s like a trip back to 1880’s and John L. Sullivan [the last bare-knuckles era Heavyweight Boxing Champion].”

While Wilbon was making the above statement, Tony Kornheiser replied, “That’s not boxing. That’s something you do on barges.”

Wilbon then continued, “But they sell out these casino/hotels, Tony.”

Kornheiser replied to this by making the assertion, “I understand that. [But] they sell them out in the same way that wrestling sells out different venues.”

It's unfortunate that these two morons can hold a job this prestigious while knowing absolutely nothing about what they're talking about. I would assume that they would have done some research about the UFC before making such outrageous remarks about the organization which has had exploratory talks with the very company that is paying their undeserving salaries, ESPN!

I used to respect these guys, even thought that they were entertaining, but after bashing the UFC and comparing them to WWE, they show how ignorant they really are. At least the UFC hasn't been tainted by a greedy promoter like Don King, who's influence has cost many fighters a judges decision (Julio Cesar Chavez v. Pernell Whitaker). MMA fighters like Matt Lindland, Hidehiko Yoshida, Karam Ibrahim, and Rulon Gardner, are OLYMPIC MEDALISTS! NOT STREET FIGHTERS! They don't fight on barges, they dont fight bare knuckle, there are rules to the game. What's more, a referee will stop an MMA fight shortly after a big strike, which will save a lot of MMA fighters from brain damage, unlike Boxing, where people are repeatedly hit in the head for 12 rounds and the ref does nothing.

I guess that tweedle dee and tweedle dum over here didn't watch the sportscenter after UFC 69, which highlighted Matt Serra's victory over George St. Pierre. Wilbon and Kornheiser, you showed how idiotic you really are.

Mike Freeman’s of CBS Sportsline also bashed the UFC, as he makes such statements as, “Boxing is fighting for its life, and in some ways the largest obstacle to its rebirth is its greatest competitor -- the worst league ever invented, the UFC.”

“Which means it is good vs. evil, Halle Berry vs. Courtney Love, true sport against the mosh pit of sweat and bloodied skull fractures known as ultimate fighting,” further wrote Freeman.

Freeman then equated MMA fighters as, “nothing but thugs and ruffians."

Thugs and ruffians, thats why these guys train vehemently to be fighters, thats why mma gyms are everywhere in the country... no, I guess he's right, these guys just join gangs and beat people up and then fight in a cage. Boxers train, so do MMA fighters. Real good reporting by this imbecile. He, just like those two ignorant schmucks from ESPN, utilize their power through media to make outlandish and falsified statements about the UFC because of some unknown vendetta they have against it... they're probably just mad that boxing is losing its popularity due to MMA... deal with it.
