On Smackdown Friday night, Vicki Guerrero may have made the single biggest mistake in her 7 months-plus as GM. Besides her refusal to cede the office to Teddy Long upon his return in November, that is.
After seeing her storyline fiance Edge fall victim to Undertaker's figure four choke finisher (gogoplata) in 2 consecutive PPV matches, one of which cost the Rated R Scammer the World title, Guerrero took vindictive, spiteful, selfish action, all in the name of protecting the other wrestlers in the locker room. She banned the gogoplata (still not identified by the announcers), and stripped Undertaker of the World title after little more than a month. She claimed she was protecting the wrestlers, but it was obvious from the go that the only person who stood to gain from this action was Edge. Yes, Festus is still selling the effects of being caught in the gogoplata a few weeks back. The Edgeheads found that out, and perhaps Zack Ryder intentionally hit Festus in the throat in order to collect evidence for his boss. Judging from the heat the widow got when she made her announcement, the fans weren't buying her claims of being responsible for the talent, especially considering that she's only had Edge's interests at heart the last five months.
Notice, too, that Long was not present, having gone back to the office, when Mrs. Guerrero made her announcement. What that says to me is that Teddy has seen and heard enough. He wants the GM's job back, all to himself. Rightfully, he should've been reinstated to his position when he returned to duty in November after being out for 2 months (storyline heart attack), but for an unknown reason, Vicki remained GM. You know what's in store for the duplicitous widow. Another tombstone piledriver, or even worse, getting choked out herself. No later than Judgment Day on May 18, but probably as early as this week. Vince McMahon, after being in Louisville for the Kentucky Derby, is in Toronto tonight, presumably to announce the draft lottery is due soon. I personally have to believe that Vince will try to correct the mistakes he's made in relation to Mrs. Guerrero, and preferably sooner than later. Undertaker was promised a long title reign last year, but was cut short by injury. Reportedly, he was promised that long reign again this year, but it's been sabotaged by bad writing. Sometimes, even a Deadman just can't win.
Now, as Paul Harvey would say, for the rest of the story. Last week, Jonathan Coachman was replaced as Smackdown color analyst after 4 months. It'd been assumed he'd signed a 6-year contract extension in 2006, but actually, it was only for 2, and it's expiring. Vince McMahon must've known this was coming, and pulled Coachman from the booth, replacing him with future Hall of Famer Mick Foley. Today, sources are reporting that Coachman has signed on with ESPN as an anchor. That means he'll be working on the ESPNews channel or on SportsCenter, or both. Given that he's done college football & basketball for CBS College Sports (formerly College Sports TV), and currently hosts MSG-NY, odds are good Coachman will get to do some play-by-play in the fall. After 8 years in the WWE, and taking quite a bit of physical abuse along the way, Coachman has decided he wants to go back to what brought him to Stanford in the first place. Having seen him on MSG-NY, I can tell you he's found a comfort zone, and while it's not certain he'll still work for MSG in the long term, this change will do him some good.
Next time, we'll take a look at a TNA character left out of our last column, "Two faces have I?". Curry Man.
