After watching & reviewing Impact & Smackdown the last two nights, I've identified 3 cases of heels making errors in judgment, perhaps more in relation to their storylines, in which case we could blame the writers for such stupidity.

In fact, let's refer back to Impact first. If you didn't see it on Thursday, you'll have another chance tonight. Team 3D, already crowned the first TNA tag team champs, called the Steiner Brothers into the ring. Brother Ray then put over that it would be an honor for him & Brother Devon to face the Steiners, who have been one of the elite tag teams of the last 20 years, along with Team 3D (aka the Dudley Boyz). Ray, and a week earlier, Jim Cornette, recognized the historical significance of a match between the two teams. Unfortunately, Scott Steiner threw cold water on the promo and ripped Ray & Devon's legacy, taking a shot at ECW as he went. As history tells us, the Steiners did have the proverbial cup of coffee in ECW back in 1995, but I am not completely certain they faced the Dudleys.

Bottom line is, a Steiners-3D match at Slammiversary on June 17 is what Joey Styles used to refer to as a tape collector's dream. While Rick Steiner ran off a list of the teams the Steiners have beaten in the past, a who's who of teams that includes the Freebirds, the Road Warriors, and the 4 Horsemen, all that did was illustrate that the Steiners dominated one era, from the late 80's to the late 90's. The Dudleyz/Team 3D have dominated the last decade, as evidenced by their 20+ tag team titles. Scott talked about winning the IWGP tag titles in Japan. I think 3D also won in Japan not too long ago, but that fact was ignored by head writer Dutch Mantel. His loss.

Now, it's over to Smackdown, and the remaining two cases.

First, WWE tag team champs Deuce & Domino were at the base of the ramp, watching the match between former champs Brian Kendrick & Paul London vs. William Regal & Dave Taylor. Late in the match, Domino rushed the ring and pushed London off the top. His mistake was staying on the apron and talking trash to London. Ref Charles Robinson saw Domino, put 2 & 2 together, and called for the bell. As soon as ring announcer Tony Chimel announced the DQ, it was Taylor who first took umbrage, and shoved Domino off the apron, touching off a brawl on the floor involving all three teams. You can guess what will happen next, a 3-way scrum for the titles next weekend, either on Smackdown, Saturday Night's Main Event, or at One Night Stand.

Later in the first half of Smackdown, US champion Montel Vontavious Porter, in all his pompous glory, had a celebration for his winning the US title. He called out former champ/mentor Chris Benoit, and demanded Benoit shake his hand. Benoit, being a sportsman, did just that. However, that wasn't enough for Porter, who wanted to rub it in just a little more. He demanded Benoit raise his hand, claiming he had Benoit's number, when it's really been the opposite. Benoit had enough, and hit the rolling German suplexes, then tore Porter's shirt and chopped him out of the ring.

There's a common thread in both cases. Domino & Porter carried their arrogance way too far, and it cost them. You can make a case for Regal & Taylor, who had a brief feud with London & Kendrick earlier this year, going after Deuce & Domino, insulted by Domino's selfish actions, specifically his lingering around to talk trash at London. The old school heels would rightfully take exception to that and have something to prove as well. As for Porter, for all of the positive strides he's made in the ring of late, leading to his title win at Judgment Day, his gimmick drops him back a few points. In fact, he may not be the most improved wrestler on the roster by the end of the year, with Mike Mizanin making some improvements in his in-ring work of late as well, evidenced by a losing effort vs. Matt Hardy last night.

What results is that Benoit & Porter will meet one more time to blow off the feud, but there so far isn't anyone who would be ready to be the next challenger. However, as with the tag team 3-way noted above, it wouldn't take much imagination for a veteran heel, say for example Fit Finlay, to take exception to Porter's antics and take a crack at the US title, which Finlay held briefly last year.

With ex-Freebird Michael Hayes as head writer for Smackdown, there exists the possibility of seeing heel vs. heel feuds based on those two cases. Old school tradition vs. new school arrogance. It would be something different, something challenging for the writers and the fans. TNA's creative team should take notes, too.
