Raw needs to fill some holes
"The Reaction Zone" Written by: Jacob Gilbert on 6/08/2007

Given the state of mind of WWE Chairman Vince McMahon on-camera these days, it's not in the best interest of the company to have him run Raw's draft on Monday. For better or worse, it's left in the hands of his inept executive assistant, that Carlton Banks wannabe, Jonathan Coachman. Can Coach handle the pressure?

In part 1, we have Val Venis, Chris Masters, and Super Crazy leaving for ECW. Now, let's see who replaces them on the Raw roster. Note, too, that even though word's been leaked that Chris Benoit may be Raw-bound, it'd be worth a swerve to send him to ECW.

From ECW to Raw:

1. Marcus Cor Van. The Alpha Male should be tired of being someone else's lackey. In TNA, Monty Brown had to waste time being subservient to Jeff Jarrett in much the same way AJ Styles & Travis Tomko are walking behind Christian Cage these days. It's time for Cor Van to finally make the big step forward. Since Stephanie and her creative team want to recreate the 80's by giving John Cena some Hogan-era monster heels to feud with, Cor Van would be a 300% improvement over Great Khali.

2. Trinity. Other than a cameo appearance at Wrestlemania, the "Full Bodied Italian" has been MIA for too long, largely because she has no one to fight in ECW, now that Ariel is gone. Trinity vs. Melina for the women's title? Yep, that's money.

3. The Majors Brothers. Brett & Brian Majors aren't really related (then again, neither were the Beverly Brothers in the 90s, but that's another story), but if the insane Mr. McMahon doesn't want the Hardys to remain a team, well, this would be the next best thing.

From Smackdown to Raw:

1. Jillian Hall. Like Trinity, Hall is better served challenging for the women's title. The storyline suspension of Ashley Massaro on Smackdown opens the door for Hall to escape to Raw and allow the writers to let Ashley follow her there when she comes off the DL.

2. Booker T (currently on the DL). With his portrait removed from the Smackdown opening, Booker is a King no more. Remember, too, that when Booker was acquired by then-GM Kurt Angle 3 years ago in a post-draft trade that sent Triple H back to Raw, Booker was upset that he was leaving Raw. He's gone as far as he can on Smackdown, that's all there is to it.

3. John Bradshaw Layfield. Quite simply, moving to the broadcast booth last year has actually been a godsend. Layfield has grown accustomed to being behind a mic, given his periodic appearances on Fox News Channel, and has matured as an announcer the last several months. Working with Jim Ross instead of Michael Cole will upgrade the Raw broadcasts big time, because Jerry Lawler's dirty old man act has grown stale. Lawler reverted to his old heel announcer persona last week on Saturday Night's Main Event, reunited with Cole for one night, and it was just like old times. Layfield has his moments of lust, too (see any appearance by Maryse or Michelle McCool in recent months), but it's clear that he's been under the learning tree with JR and Smackdown head writer Michael Hayes, who was a pretty good commentator, too.

And, yes, that means Lawler is headed to Smackdown. You hate to break up what has been a winning combination, one that was inducted into the Hall of Fame earlier this year, but if it means a more adversarial approach to commentary on Raw between JBL & JR, so be it. Raw would be better for it. JR, after all, worked with Hayes in the old UWF in the 80s.

4. Ken Kennedy (DL). Yes, it makes more sense that he should remain on Smackdown to be the next challenger for Edge after Vengeance, but if he goes to Raw, that opens the door for Batista to reclaim the World title, and Kennedy would instead challenge John Cena. Kennedy is ready for Monday nights. Others advocate MVP for the spot. He's not yet there.

Our draft preview concludes with Smackdown next time.
