COLUMNS
a smack in the draft
"The Reaction Zone" Written by: Jacob Gilbert on 6/09/2007

It's Smackdown's turn. 2 years ago, Teddy Long was the sole GM of Smackdown, and made a good draft. He might've lost John Cena in the first round, but got Batista at the end. This time, Long is joined by Vicki Guerrero and, to some extent, Kristal Marshall. Let's see how this 3-person team drafts this year:

From Raw to Smackdown:

1. Jeff Hardy. The crossovers between brands the first half of this year led to the Hardys winning the tag team titles on Raw, a title run that ended Monday. Regardless of what Vince McMahon may think to the contrary, the Hardys may be just the team that gets current Smackdown tag champs Deuce & Domino over the top. And since Vince is auditioning for a remake of "Dr. Shrinker", based on his facials this past week, common sense will finally prevail.

2. Torrie Wilson. After getting squashed by Carlito on Monday, I don't see Torrie hanging around Raw much longer. She's not close to being championship material, so getting matches vs. Melina, Victoria, et al, is out of the question. They tried turning Torrie heel 2 years ago when she first came to Raw, but it didn't pan out. However, there is the prospect of renewing old hostilities with her nemesis at the time, Ashley Massaro, now on the DL.

3. Eugene. Speaking of hitting the wall, the savant peaked some time ago, but now they're tweaking him by giving him a "homemade superhero costume" styled like Superman. I'm sorry, but the gimmick reached its expiration date a long time ago. I see him getting squashed by Mark Henry about a month in, then returning as Nick Dinsmore, passed off as Eugene's "older brother", seeking revenge.

4. Jerry Lawler. In the last chapter, I said that JBL would be moving to Raw in an exchange of color analysts. Lawler reteamed with Michael Cole last week on Saturday Night's Main Event, and it was like old home week. JBL has become an elite analyst almost overnight, much like Tazz before him a few years ago. With Jillian Hall moving to Raw as well, Lawler can lust after Ashley and Torrie to his heart's content.

From ECW to Smackdown:

1. Matt Striker. The ex-teacher made his debut on Smackdown a couple of years back in the infamous Kurt Angle invitational. He's been treading water ever since, even in ECW. The heel act is all played out now, but if he comes here along with Eugene, he can retain the heel gimmick a wee bit longer.

2. Hardcore Holly (on the DL): Can't see him returning to ECW to feud with Gene Snitsky. It just isn't going to happen. I've got two other disabled stars leaving (Mysterio, Booker), so this would be almost a fair tradeoff. He's always worked best as a bully heel, and again, feuding with Eugene would be good, provided the scenario I described earlier doesn't happen too soon.

3. Kevin Thorn. Sure, he's actually a better fit for ECW because of it airing on Sci-Fi, but unfortunately, there's no room for Thorn to advance. A feud with Kane to start would lead to an inevitable meeting with Undertaker after the 1st of the year.

We'll see how everything shakes out on Monday.
