The truest test of a champion
"The Reaction Zone" Written by: Jacob Gilbert on 6/22/2007

For the first time since the revival of ECW as a 3rd brand, all of the WWE titles, including the ECW title, will be on the line in one PPV. Vengeance this year is being sub-titled "Night of Champions", and let me go on record as suggesting that next year they can just call it the Night of the Champions and leave it at that. Let's take a look at the card:

ECW title: Chris Benoit vs. CM Punk.

Old school ECW (Benoit) vs. new school (Punk) in what Joey Styles is dying to call a tape collector's dream match. In my opinion, this could very well steal the show, and it wouldn't be out of line to go as far as to say these two could be accused of grand theft. Whomever wins this puts some much needed credibility back into the ECW title, which was drained of cred after "Mr. McMahon" stole the title from Bobby Lashley at Backlash. Neither man needs to turn heel here, but a rivalry borne of mutual respect would be great business. I'm going with Benoit here because while Punk is equally deserving, now isn't the time.

WWE World tag team titles: Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch vs. Matt & Jeff Hardy.

It's too soon for Cade & Murdoch to drop the titles back to the Hardys, and we already know that Brian Kendrick & Paul London wait in the wings as the likely next challengers. This should be the blow-off for Cade & Murdoch vs. the Hardys, and Matt's last match under the Raw umbrella for a long while. Pick-Cade & Murdoch.

WWE Women's title: Melina Perez vs. Candice Michelle.

Candice has had Melina's number of late, but the haughty poser princess finally got off the schneid when she pinned former champ Mickie James Monday night. She's due to get a win back from Candice, especially after that silly pudding bowl match at One Night Stand 3 weeks ago. Pick-Melina.

WWE Intercontinental title: Santino Marella vs. Umaga.

Umaga doesn't have any backup anymore. They took Armando Estrada away from him, and we know the story with the McMahons. On paper, I'd say Umaga could conceivably regain the title, but since they already dropped the hint that Will Regal, a former IC champion, would be next for Marella, Santino escapes again. Pick-Marella.

WWE title: John Cena vs. Mick Foley vs. Randy Orton vs. Bobby Lashley vs. King Booker (w/Queen Sharmell).

It's a weird coincidence that the finals of ABC's Young Guns: Fast Cars & Superstars also airs Sunday, and Cena could score a daily double, as he's reached the finals of the Young Guns competition. I'm ruling out Foley as a contender here, and in all probability, Booker & Lashley could resume hostilities. Orton pinned the former ECW champ Monday, and of course he's tagged for another go-round with former mentor Triple H upon the latter's return later this summer. As much as I'd rather see Lashley win the title here, I just don't see it happening. Pick-Cena.

WWE Cruiserweight title: Chavo Guerrero vs. Jimmy Wang Yang.

See the women's title match. Same scenario, but a different result here. They need fresh blood at the top of the cruiser division, unless they feel Chavo should drop it to Rey Mysterio upon his return from the DL. I don't see that happening. Yang gets a little payback from earlier this year, when he beat Greg Helms for the title, only to have Guerrero take it away from him mere minutes later. Pick-Yang.

WWE US title: Montel V. Porter vs. Ric Flair.

This will play out similarly to Porter's feud with Benoit, with Flair filling Benoit's role as the starmaker. Too soon for Porter to drop the title, though. Flair will chop Porter apart, but youth will be served here. Pick-Porter.

WWE tag team titles: Deuce & Domino (w/Cherry) vs. The Major Brothers.

This has not been officially announced on-air, and these two teams were matched in a dark match on Tuesday that should've been aired. Shows a lack of class on the part of Uncreative by ignoring the tag title picure. Again, too soon for a title change, and the Majors are not ready to hold the titles. Pick-Deuce & Domino.

WWE World title: Edge vs. Batista (last chance for Batista).

With Ken Kennedy drafted away to Raw, the door opens for Batista to reclaim the title. The "Last chance" stip makes it even more likely, and with Mark Henry off the DL, Batista has a challenger waiting in the wings. However, if Edge were to retain, Batista would drop down and either he & Flair challenge Deuce & Domino for the tag titles, or he chases Porter for the US title. Bank on another tag title run for Batista in short order, because he has to regain the organizational confidence before he can be trusted with the World title one more time. Rumors have Edge facing Triple H at Summerslam, but I doubt it. He's more likely to be facing Mysterio or Flair or Matt Hardy. Pick-Edge.

Of course, I could be wrong.
