A changing of the guard
"The Reaction Zone" Written by: Jacob Gilbert on 8/24/2007

Summerslam, billed once again as the biggest party of the summer, might not be so festive for four reigning champions when it ends Sunday night. Yes, I foresee as many as four title changes, which happens to be the exact number of title matches. Let's take a look at the card.

ECW World title: John Morrison vs. CM Punk. Morrison gained the pin Tuesday night, and won the last two PPV matches vs. Punk. He can quote all the Doors lyrics he wants, maybe even try to sing like Jim Morrison, but once the music's over, it's time to turn out the lights on his title run. I am reminded of a line from the 1990 series, "The Bradys", spoken by Bobby when he wanted to break up with the woman he'd eventually marry. "It was good, it was fun, but now it's over." Morrison just doesn't have the presence to be a viable champion in the long term. Pick: Punk.

WWE title: John Cena vs. Randy Orton. Da Champ is up against it this time, facing a psychotic, sociopathic "Legend Killer" who isn't happy until he leaves his victims totally out of it. It's been three years, as Orton has reminded us, since he won the World title, also at Summerslam. Cena's third title reign has been his longest at 11 months. Remember, too, that Brian Kendrick & Paul London held the WWE tag titles on Smackdown for that same length of time before losing to Deuce & Domino in Italy in April. Apparently, when it comes to champions, 11 equals craps. Orton should hope he holds on for more than a month this time. Pick: Orton.

Intercontinental title: Umaga vs. Ken Kennedy vs. Carlito. If we have Carlito & Kennedy with their shoulders down again at the same time like we did on Monday, all Umaga has to do is sit on them, and he retains. However, I believe he won't factor in the decision at the end. They're in the process of making him a babyface, with a fresh opportunity to challenge for the WWE title awaiting. What? You thought Triple H would go right after Orton again? You have to hope it doesn't happen. Orton vs. Umaga is fresh, and would get the Samoan Bulldozer over as a face big time. As a result, to protect him, you don't have him do the job. Kennedy is not going to make the same mistake twice. Pick: Kennedy.

Triple H vs. King Booker. Count me among those who doesn't think that the Cerebral Assassin is just going to plow through right away. To prove he's more of a team player as he's getting older, Hunter has to make this feud more interesting than it was when he had plain ol' Booker T challenging him for the World title 4 years ago at Wrestlemania. Consider the wisdom of one Roddy Piper. Just when you think you've got all the answers, WWE Uncreative changes the questions. I don't see Triple H winning the title right away, allowing Orton some room to breathe. Survivor Series or Royal Rumble, IMPO, would be a better bet for title #11. Upset special: King Booker.

#1 contender's battle royal for the women's title. The field: ECW is represented by Extreme Expose. Smackdown has Torrie Wilson, Victoria, Kristal Marshall, & Michelle McCool. Raw has Mickie James, Jillian Hall, Melina, & Beth Phoenix. I believe Maria may make it an even dozen. If you think any of the Smackdown girls has a realistic chance, you might have to check back with Miss Cleo before she appears on "The Surreal Life". Beth has already gone around the horn with champion Candice Michelle, so.....! Pick: Phoenix.

WWE World title: Great Khali vs. Batista. Let's face it. You could dress Khali up as a mummy and he'd treat it like a compliment. He moves about as well as one, and has the communication skills to match. In short, he's been a bust as champion. The vise grip (claw) that he's added in recent weeks has come several months too late. If he introduced it when he debuted last year, people would care. Batista has to keep Khali off balance, and to do that, he has to bring the behemoth down to ground level. Do what the champion won't expect. And that will bring the title back into the pit of danger. Pick: Batista.

Rey Mysterio vs. Chavo Guerrero. 10 months ago, Rey went on the DL after losing a "I Quit" match to Chavo. News of Rey's pending return has sent Chavo over the edge and onto the sociopathic path of rage that Orton has already blazed. Seeing Chavo talk to Rey's black mask made me think of when he had a wooden hobby horse named Pepe for a companion in WCW 10 years ago. I hear Dr. Zigmund Ziff is coming out of retirement, and Chavo may be his first patient. Pick: Mysterio.

Kane vs. Finlay. Hornswoggle doesn't have a title defense scheduled for Sunday---yet. Figure he'll get involved in this return from the 8/17 Smackdown. However, Kane is looking for payback for the assault with a deadly shillelagh administered by Finlay. Payback he shall have. Pick: Kane.

Fox has already cancelled "Anchorwoman" after 1 episode. I don't see that as the end of the trail for ex-diva Lauren Jones, though. I'll lay even odds that she'll turn up again within a year's time. ESPN might be calling her soon.
