"The Reaction Zone" Written by: Jacob Gilbert on 11/02/2007

It's been an amazing week. If the sports writers ever bothered, TNA & WWE would've given them fodder for the transactions section of the sports pages the last couple of days.

Let's start with TNA. The other shoe dropped for backstage reporter Letitia Cline earlier this week, when she was released. They'd teased a feud between her and Crystal, who replaced her when Letitia went off on an outside project. I guess they figure that since both women are blond, young, and attractive, the average fan won't know the difference.

Over in WWE, former Los Angeles Clippers cheerleader Eve Torres won the 2007 Diva Search on Monday, the 2nd straight year an ex-NBA cheerleader has won. Extreme Expose's Layla El, formerly affiliated with the Miami Heat, won last year. Three days later, one of Layla's dance partners, Brooke Adams, was cut by WWE without explanation. ECW's talent roster is already thinner than a sheet of onionskin paper, so why make this move? Monday's battle royal marked a rare opportunity for Brooke to wrestle, and she was the 2nd diva eliminated (Layla was the first one taken out) in the match, won by the 3rd member of Extreme Expose, Kelly Kelly.

That having been said, there's two options. First, there was another Brooke, who was the runner-up in the Diva Search, and might've been secretly signed to a contract, the rationale being that the average fan might not notice the difference if they put her in Extreme Expose to replace Adams. The other, and more likely, option, sees Eve filling the vacancy in Extreme Expose, leading to a feud with Layla. Considering that Eve won only $100,000 compared to Layla's $250,000 last year, that would be an issue. They'd have to eventually address how Mike Mizanin acquired the contracts of Extreme Expose in the first place before getting to that point.

The smart move, though, is one that WWE Uncreative has never bothered to do with Layla and previous winners Christy Hemme (now in TNA) & Ashley Massaro, and that would be to send Eve to either OVW or Florida Championship to get some seasoning.

While on the European tour two weeks ago, Chris Masters suffered an injury during a tag match. Earlier tonight, it was announced that Masters had landed right back on the suspended list for violating the wellness policy for a 2nd time. Masters is now gone until January, his feud with Chuck Palumbo derailed yet again. Masters, though, is not alone.

Harry Smith, working under the name D. H. (for Davey Hart) Smith on Raw, was also suspended today, for 30 days, as this was his first offense, just 11 days after he'd finally made his television debut. Smith will return right before Armageddon next month, and will likely pick up his feud with Carlito at that point. There might be more names on the list in the coming weeks, creating a revolving door effect that may have an effect on a potential comeback.

At the end of Smackdown, announcer John Layfield left the desk and attacked Undertaker and Dave Batista, who'd been "interviewed", after a fashion, by Layfield the previous two weeks, only to leave the pompous former champion lying in the ring. JBL is feeling his oats again, and I suspect he may attempt an in-ring comeback, 18 months after losing two matches in one night on Smackdown (vs. Bobby Lashley and Rey Mysterio). Forced out of the ring because of a back injury, Layfield moved into the broadcast booth last summer when Tazz was reassigned to the revived ECW brand. Based on what's happened over the course of three weeks, I think Layfield's days as a WWE commentator are numbered. His life outside WWE is pretty good, considering that he just signed on as a contributor to Fox's new Business Channel, to complement his appearances on Fox News Channel. He'll probably dust off the tights and boots for one or two PPV matches in the next few months, then officially hang 'em up for good.

And should that happen, that would open the door for Ric Flair to return, and replace Layfield at the desk. Flair wouldn't have to wrestle as much, and he'd be in a position similar to that of Raw analyst Jerry Lawler, wrestling only when the opportunity presents itself. Flair's a better talker than Layfield, anyway, and this would more than make up for the neglect that Flair has suffered in terms of mic work the last few years. Remember, Smackdown has another veteran wrestler, Michael Hayes, as its head writer, and he & Flair go way back. Two hours of Flair telling old war stories while calling matches would be infinitely better than JBL rehashing the same tired cliches fed into his ears by Vince McMahon week after week.

Living in upstate NY, I won't get to see the Oklahoma Sooners play Saturday night (we're getting Florida State vs. Boston College), so I'll miss out on Jim Ross doing player intros for his beloved Sooners. ABC gets him for one night, but could a steady gig on NBC be in the offing for JR? There are rumors of NBC picking up Raw, perhaps repurposing the feed from USA, in the event of a writers strike in Hollywood. WWE is not affected by the strike, even though they have former TV writers like Dave Lagana (ex-"Friends") on staff. The wider exposure for Raw may be the shot in the arm it needs to get the ratings back up to a respectable level. Not only that, but consider the crossover potential. WWE already has had people like John Cena and Triple H appear on "The Tonight Show" and "Late Night with Conan O'Brien", but what about post-strike gigs on shows like "The Office"? The mind boggles!

Finally, best of luck to Marissa Mazzola-McMahon, wife of Shane, who will be competing in Sunday's NYC Marathon. There's also a Stephanie McMahon entered, but it's not the Billion Dollar Princess, who turned 31 in September. This Stephanie is 2 years older. Of course, we could wish for Our Stephanie to run, anyway.....!
