Now, we're saving the worst for last. It's time to hand out some awards in TNA.
Wrestler of the Year: Samoa Joe. In my opinion, Joe has been the most consistent performer in the ring this year. Now, bear in mind that I don't watch PPV, so I'm only going by what I've seen on Impact. To tell you the truth, Joe should be the champion, but has fallen victim to the backstage politicking employed by ex-WWE stars Kurt Angle and Christian Cage. Don't think that Cage doesn't play the political game, because he practically has since coming in 2 years ago. Every time Joe has had a title match, he's been denied the grand prize, and that has to change in '08.
Runners-up: Cage, Angle, Frankie Kazarian, Alex Shelley, Jay Lethal.
Babyface of the Year: Eric Young. You can never go wrong with an underdog. Ever since turning face in '06, Young has been cast in that role, usually as comedy relief, because TNA Uncreative doesn't have enough faith in him to be taken seriously. He has the backing of Jeff Jarrett, who returned briefly in May to help Young vs. Robert Roode. What we're looking for from Young in '08 is a run with the X division title at the very least.
Runners-up: Lethal, Samoa Joe.
Heel of the Year: In the ring, the award goes to Kurt Angle. When Kurt arrived in September 2006, he ping-ponged between face and heel in his feud with Samoa Joe so often, it was hard to tell who rightfully deserved the fans' backing. Now, however, Angle is TNA's answer to Lex Luthor. A manipulative, devious puppet master who is reliving the McMahon-Helmsley Era with himself & wife Karen in the roles of Triple H & Stephanie McMahon, and trying to do it better. However, the act has quickly gotten stale. There have been weeks where Kurt & Karen have been in virtually every backstage segment, hogging camera time. Never mind the goodwill the Angles have fostered backstage. They have done the impossible. They've made both HHH and Jeff Jarrett look like choir boys with their antics.
Outside the ring, the other recipient of the award is the Angles' co-conspirator, Vince Russo. Now that they're politically linked together, it's going to be an even bigger chore convincing Jarrett and Dixie Carter to get rid of Russo once and for all. On his 3rd tour of duty with TNA in its 5 1/2 year history, Russo still has people thinking his recycled ideas can bring ratings. They haven't. Russo, and to a lesser extent, Dutch Mantel, has to go. Jim Cornette can do a better job with the book than these out-of-touch, creatively bankrupt tools.
Runners-up: Christian Cage, James Mitchell.
Woman of the Year: Gail Kim. 4 1/2 years ago, Gail won her only WWE women's title, but dropped it after a month and turned heel soon after. Now, she's the TNA women's champion, embroiled in a feud with Awesome Kong, which is TNA's answer to, say, Beth Phoenix vs. Mickie James over on Raw. Kong will be the champion in short order, but TNA needs to develop the rest of the division and create additional challengers outside of Kong and Jackie Moore.
Runners-up: Moore, Kong.
Eddie Guerrero MVP award: Kevin Nash. "Big Sexy" was prodded out of retirement late in the year by Russo, but the former WWE/WCW champion's best contribution was backstage, as helped put over Jay Lethal, Sonjay Dutt, Alex Shelley, and others before being reduced to being a foil for the Angles. Without Nash, the X division would've already been buried before Team 3D came along.
Runners-up: Samoa Joe, AJ Styles.
Tag team of the Year: Latin American Xchange. Homicide & Hotstuff Hernandez have survived the departure of their manager, Konnan, and it's the fault of Uncreative that the newest member of LAX, Shelly Martinez, is forced to keep her face hidden behind a bandana mask and a pair of shades, pretending to be a male member of Latino Nation during LAX's feud with the Rock & Rave Infection (Jimmy Rave, Lance Hoyt, Christy Hemme). The mask will come off sooner rather than later, but the reason for the stalling lies in Russo's booking priorities. Will LAX reclaim the tag titles in '08? Let's hope.
Runners-up: Team 3D, Motor City Machine Gunns.
Most Improved Wrestler of the Year: Robert Roode. Say what you will about this Canadian grappler and his poor man's JBL ripoff gimmick, but he has stepped up his game in '07. Again, the payoff to Traci Brooks' split from Roode is being delayed due to Russo's prioritizing, but it will happen. Associating with the Angles will help Roode in the short term, but not long term.
Runners-up: Jay Lethal, Frankie Kazarian, Chris Sabin.
Feud of the Year: Team 3D vs. the X division. After Kevin Nash was asked to play a psychoanalyst for Kurt Angle, it fell to Brothers Ray & Devon to help raise the profile of the division. They'll turn on Johnny Devine soon enough, and there are rumors that they'll be leaving soon. For X division fans, not soon enough.
Runners-up: Kurt Angle vs. Sting.
Match of the Year: Angle vs. Frankie Kazarian. Kaz got his shot at the championship, and while he came up short, he got more mileage out of his match with Angle than he did the entire time he was with WWE 2 years ago.
Runners-up: None.
