Things that make you say "Huh?"
"The Reaction Zone" Written by: Jacob Gilbert on 2/09/2008

In the last couple of days, the WWE has rocked everyone's world with a pair of corporate moves that speak more to the company's overall bottom line. Consider the following:

News item #1: WWE severs ties with Ohio Valley Wrestling (2/7).

This move had been anticipated for some time. Less than a year ago, WWE had moved their secondary developmental program from Deep South Wrestling in Georgia to Steve Keirn's revived Florida Championship Wrestling in Tampa. Now, all of the farm activity is in one barn, shall we say, as FCW is now the lone developmental territory for WWE. From a corporate and fiscal standpoint, it makes sense, because all of the operations are consolidated and centered in one place, and most of the staff involved in that department are based out of Tampa anyway.

OVW's legacy is evident in today's WWE roster. Several active wrestlers, including Randy Orton, John Cena, Beth Phoenix, Dave Batista, and Elijah Burke, came up through OVW. Relations between OVW and WWE had become strained in recent months, however, and it didn't help that when Triple H & Shawn Michaels paid a visit to OVW a few weeks back, they came back with a negative report. That might've been enough to seal the deal, but we'll never know for sure.

The severing of the OVW-WWE link also ends Al Snow's long tenure with WWE as a wrestler, trainer, and announcer, after more than a decade.

News item #2: WWE pulls Smackdown off CW, effective after the current season (2/8).

After 3 seasons on CW, and 6 on UPN before that, Smackdown is on the move again, but the speculation is rampant as to which direction the series is going. There are a number of options:

My Network TV, the home of the International Fight League, has been touted as a possible destination. However, MNTV is not available in as many homes as CW or even most cable networks. What also works against MNTV is the fact that it's owned by the Fox network. Would Vince McMahon be willing to put money in the pocket of business rival Rupert Murdoch?

A more sensible move would be to move Smackdown under the NBC-Universal umbrella, joining Raw (USA) and ECW (Sci-Fi). Again, it's all about consolidation of product. This could work one of two ways. Either USA picks up Smackdown and moves either "Psych" or "Monk" to another night (i.e. Sunday), or it winds up on another NBC-U net, like Bravo. Don't laugh, but CNBC would be an option in this case, too, since they've had wrestling programming in the past, specifically the Savoldi family's IWCCW in the early 90's.

And, then, there's the possibility of Smackdown changing nights again, if it were to go to another broadcast network. NBC could use something fresh on Saturdays, but the revival of "Saturday Night's Main Event" has not put up the strong numbers of the 80's. A consistent presence, with plenty of advertising and cross-promotion, however, might be a different story. It's been talked about that if it were to go to My Network, Smackdown would move back to its original night, Thursdays, setting up a head-to-head, at least from 9-10 (ET) with TNA Impact. I don't see that happening. We've got six months before the change takes effect, so a lot can happen.

News item #3: WWE plans another wedding angle (2/8).

The seeds were planted on last night's Smackdown. Just 4 1/2 months after Teddy Long suffered a "heart attack" on the season premiere, Smackdown is bracing for another storyline wedding, this time of Edge (married in real life) to widow Vicki Guerrero. I don't like the timing of this at all. Instead of greasing the skids for Vicki's exit as GM of Smackdown, it appears they're prepared to keep her in that role long-term. Stress "appears". Something good could happen out of this.

Let's say the "nuptials" are planned for May. Plenty of time for Teddy to stand up for himself and reclaim what is rightfully his job. They'll revisit the events of Sept. 21, albeit with some editing since Teddy's storyline love, Kristal Marshall, has since been dismissed, but add some new footage that reveals what had been planned all along, that Teddy's "heart attack" was the result of a little sabotage, set up by Vicki. Remember when she told Kristal she had "an opportunity for success" last year? Her ascension to the GM's office was the culmination of that opportunity. That evidence comes to light at just the right time, and Vicki is so busted, such that Vince has no choice but to terminate her as GM and reinstate Long to the position.

By that time, of course, Edge won't be the World champion. Chavo Guerrero won't be the ECW champion at that point, either.

Belated condolences to Triple H and his family. Hunter's brother-in-law, Conrad, passed away last week, prompting HHH to return to his home state of New Hampshire and miss the Raw tapings.
