The problem with having heels in the roles of figurehead General Managers on all three WWE brands is that there is a danger that the gimmick will be even more stale than usual. So allow me to offer a report card.
Raw: William Regal has been in office since last summer, but, as Tazz would say, it's not his first rodeo in the administrative wing. Regal served as commissioner for most of 2001 until being supplanted by Mick Foley, the man Regal replaced in the first place, in October, near the end of the Invasion angle. Regal started his GM run as more of a tweener, indulging his inner game show host with parodies of "American Idol" and "The Dating Game". He fell more toward the heel side of the ledger during the Vince McMahon-Hornswoggle storyline, but now that Vince has stepped back into the shadows, Regal is back to being somewhere in the middle, as evidenced by his challenging WWE Champ Randy Orton last week in London. While Regal lost the match, he did give the champion all he could handle and then some.
Regal gets an A-.
Smackdown: Just how bad has the Vicki Guerrero administration been? Since being appointed interim GM on the Sept. 28 show, with Teddy Long sidelined by a storyline heart attack, Guerrero has set new lows for acting, the diametric opposite, if you will, of her late husband Eddie. Strangely, even though Long has since returned, he's been forced into a subservient role when he in fact is the rightful GM. However, Long has not complained one iota. When Vicki is not around, Long's back in the saddle, as if he never left. Uncreative really screwed this one up by not offering a real explanation for why Vicki had the interim tag removed so quickly, and why Long is now an "assistant" GM, when Vicki's occupying HIS chair.
The bottom line, of course, is that Vicki is not long for the gig, period, and should be out of office by the end of the summer, if not sooner, depending on when Edge realizes he doesn't need her anymore, not that he ever did.
Vicki Guerrero gets an F.
ECW: Armando Estrada was the last of the GMs to be installed, since Vicki was promoted from Assistant GM in September. Estrada's had it in for Tommy Dreamer from day one, and is currently making life miserable for Dreamer's protege, Colin Delaney, in a storyline that echoes the Vince McMahon-Zach Gowen angle from 2003 on Smackdown, with Stephanie, then the GM, in Dreamer's position as the face mentor, except that it's far worse. Delaney has been put in one mismatch after another, and there are those who liken it to when Mikey Whipwreck first arrived in ECW back in the 90's. Delaney, facially, looks a little like Sean Waltman did when he first came to WWE in 1993, albeit a wee bit younger. However, any comparisons between Delaney and either Waltman or Whipwreck end there. Delaney is 0-forever in singles, and Uncreative doesn't know how to end the storyline to give Delaney that elusive first win. My idea is to have him earn it at the expense of---who else?---Estrada, who is also a non-winner.
And, then, there is Estrada's role in the collusive conspiracy to screw CM Punk out of the ECW title, putting it in the hands of Chavo Guerrero over the winter. Before Edge entered the picture, it looked as though the creative team might actually do something right and have Estrada and Vicki be a couple. Two Latin executives sharing more than just business. Nice idea, but never realized.
Since ECW has the smallest roster of the three brands, that explains why Estrada isn't on every week, unlike his counterparts. He is part of the rotation. For that, Estrada gets a B-.
So what needs to happen? Simple. Vicki Guerrero has to go, we all know that. Regal is in no danger unless Vince has another panic attack. If Estrada's abuse of Dreamer & Delaney goes on any longer, people might be screaming for his head next. Dreamer would at this point in his career be a better fit as GM of ECW, but that would suggest a return to classic ECW, and we know Vince doesn't want that to happen. However, Dreamer is more of a JTTS at present, and isn't going to be a serious title contender any time soon. Worse, he could get the same fate as Sandman and be drafted away later this summer, but being released doesn't seem likely. I see Dreamer moving into the GM's office, though, before this year is over, because Estrada's days will be numbered come Summerslam.
The widow Guerrero, though, will be gone sooner. Her storyline engagement to Edge will end the same way Long's engagement to Kristal Marshall did, without a completed marriage. Edge will turn on her and dump her once and for all, admitting what we all know, that he used her to get the World title back. Frustrated by an inability to regain it from Undertaker, Edge will take it out on Guerrero, and send her away. That allows Long to reclaim the GM's job, which should never have been taken away in the first place, and allow Uncreative to do something rare. Correct a mistake. It's the right thing to do, and this time they can't ignore it.
