COLUMNS
A shower of wrath, risk, & potential reward
"The Reaction Zone" Written by: Jacob Gilbert on 4/26/2008

The Backlash card is pretty much set now, with 2 rematches from Wrestlemania on the docket. I do see the potential for a title change, maybe two of them. Let's take a look at the card.

ECW title: Kane vs. Chavo Guerrero.

I can't see them putting the title back on Chavo at all, even with the addition of Bam Neely (Justin LaRouche, called up from Florida) as a bodyguard. Why does Chavo need a bodyguard in the first place? As long as we're asking, why are they thinking of giving Santino Marella one over on Raw? 6 cruiserweight titles and 2 tag titles (both with his late uncle Eddie in 2002-3) says a lot more about Chavo than his present persona does. Kane had the WWE(F) title for all of 24 hours 10 years ago. I think that after this, Neely could be put in position to be the next challenger, to justify his callup. Other than that, I can see Kane renewing hostilities with Shel Benjamin, or, once he comes off the DL, Big Daddy V. Pick--Kane.

WWE World title: Undertaker vs. Edge.

Open and shut case. Edge & Vicki Guerrero's schemes will backfire, and hopefully, this will start the beginning of the end of Vicki's tenure as GM. She has to go!!! How many times do I have to say this? The Rated R Scammer will probably weasel his way into one more title match at Judgment Day, but that should be the end. They can always turn Big Show back heel and give him a title shot before Rey Mysterio returns to complete recent business with the colossus. Outside of that, I can see Chavo getting a crack at the Deadman, too, but down the line lurks Vlad Kozlov, who should get his time under the learning tree around Summerslam. Pick--Undertaker.

Big Show vs. Great Khali.

We all know Khali is going on vacation after Backlash. Back home in India, he's a national hero, so the thinking here is that Show will put him on the shelf with some kind of injury. When Khali returns, it'll be just before he also appears on the big screen in "Get Smart". They'll have the rematch, appropriately, at Vengeance. Pick--Big Show.

Shawn Michaels vs. Dave Batista.

It started with Batista claiming that HBK should've lost to Ric Flair at Wrestlemania. Now, the Animal is angry over the way HBK weaseled his way to the top in the 90's. Something got lost in the development of this script when Michael Hayes, Smackdown's head writer, was put on suspension earlier this month. Then, there's Chris Jericho as the guest referee, and he's alienated both men in recent weeks. He may be the x factor, especially since he has past histories with both. However, I don't see Jericho factoring into the finish at all. Michaels fired a warning shot on Smackdown when he cost Batista the World title, so Batista has revenge on his mind. Pick--Batista.

Women's tag: Cherry, Michelle McCool, Maria Kanellis, Kelly Kelly, Ashley Massaro, & Mickie James vs. Melina Perez, Natalya Niedhart, Beth Phoenix, Layla El, Victoria, & Jillian Hall.

This spun out of the face divas having a victory party for 4-time champion Mickie on Raw. Beth's not happy that she no longer has the title, but they may have tipped off some draft plans by having Michelle initiate contact with Phoenix. As we've seen on Smackdown the last two weeks now, Cherry may be the weakest link, as she's just getting her feet wet as a wrestler. Beth will get her rematch for the title, but I can't see them putting it on her. Similarly, I don't see Natalya staying on Smackdown too long. She's got future champion written all over her. Mickie needs this more to reestablish herself as the class of the division. Pick--Team Mickie.

WWE title: Randy Orton vs. John Cena vs. John Bradshaw Layfield vs. Triple H.

Last month, everyone and his brother picked the Cerebral Assassin to win title #12, but Orton, who sounded a warning himself in a promo on Raw the week before Mania, became the 2nd straight reigning WWE champion to retain at Mania (Cena did it the two previous years). However, the Legend Killer's time is finally up, now that the title match is an elimination bout, as it should be. Cena's still got movie business to complete. JBL's odds would be about 100-1, since he's poison at the box office, despite his claims to the contrary. I see this coming down to Orton & Helmsley, and this time, it's going to be game, set, & match. Pick--Triple H.

US title: Montel V. Porter vs. Matt Hardy.

Hardy summed things up nicely on Smackdown when he stated that MVP did everything he could to avoid defending the title against him before Matt was put on the DL in November. The writers couldn't find anyone else to challenge, so Porter held on to the strap far longer than he should have. The lack of title defenses would've cost Porter the title long ago if they had sensible people writing the show. Time's up for the Most Vacuous Poser, too. Pick--Hardy.

The initial issue of WWE Kids is on the shelves now, and unlike WWE Magazine, it isn't polybagged. The corporate decision to discontinue the comics inside the magazine may actually be a costly mistake, because the artwork, done by comics veterans like Joe Staton, John Byrne, and Steve Lightle, is one of the stongest selling points of the issue, which otherwise is structured just like the parent book. WWE dumped editor Paul Kupperberg, as I reported previously, and it was Kupperberg, who worked with all of the above artists at DC Comics, who'd hired them, to give the mag some credibility. Now, I wouldn't be at all surprised if WWE Kids goes belly up before the year is out.
