Getting caught in the Backlash
"The Reaction Zone" Written by: Jacob Gilbert on 4/27/2007

As of right now, 6 matches are scheduled for Backlash, but figure that at least one or two more will be added by showtime on Sunday to pad out the card instead of overloading on promos for "The Condemned". Every match on the card is a title match, so maybe this is how they intend to solve the problem of their "B"-level PPV's. After going 5-3 at Wrestlemania at the beginning of the month, let's see how Backlash shakes out....

WWE title: Fatal 4-way: John Cena (C) vs. Edge, Shawn Michaels, & Randy Orton.

Cena & Michaels ripped the roof off Earl's Court on Monday with a Match of the Year candidate. Lord knows HBK's had a few of those over the years. Factor in Randy Orton landing back in the doghouse after trashing a German hotel room and the fact that Edge still may not be 100% recovered from his jaw injury, and it adds up to Cena retaining the championship. There will be another day for Cena-HBK III in singles, much like the series Michaels had with Kurt Angle just two years ago.

World tag team titles: Matt & Jeff Hardy vs. Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch.

With 7 world tag titles between the two teams, this could be a show stealer. Cade & Murdoch have been to the top of the mountain once before, back in the fall of '05, and swept the split singles matches on Raw the last two weeks. However, even though I said a week and a half ago elsewhere that I thought the Hardys might lose here, I don't see that now after those two Raws. Now's not the time. I'm going with the Hardys.

Women's title: Melina Perez vs. Mickie James.

The poser princess dropped the title in Paris on Tuesday, even though she wasn't the one jobbing (it was Victoria in a botch). She came out and whined to Coach, asking for a rematch, and she got it, getting the belt back with a leverage violation. The women are lucky to get air time these days thanks to Chairman Wackjob hogging the spotlight, and Melina won on Monday, beating an overmatched Maria. I say, lightning strikes again, and Melina's 2nd title reign comes to an abrupt end. Going with Mickie here.

ECW title: Bobby Lashley vs. Vince & Shane McMahon & Umaga.

This will be a comedy of errors, all of them on the McMahons. Chairman Wackjob just doesn't get it, and, sadly, probably never will. This should be the blowoff to Lashley-Umaga, with Gene Snitsky waiting in the wings as the next challenger. Look for Vince to overplay his hand---again---and make it no-DQ, only to see it backfire. Lashley retains.

US title: Chris Benoit vs. MVP.

Montel Porter had a star-making performance at Wrestlemania nearly 4 weeks ago, but didn't win the title. This time, though, is a different story. Of course, he'd be better off losing the Power Ranger starter set he wears to the ring and switched to a more conventional outfit. Once he loses the unitards, people will respect him even more. He will be the US champ through the summer, starting with this match. Trying again with MVP, and maybe this time I'm right.

World title, Last Man Standing: Undertaker vs. Batista.

3 months ago, John Cena beat Umaga in this type of match. 5 months prior to that, Undertaker handed Great Khali his only loss to date in the same match on Smackdown. This should be the last LMS match for a while, as they don't want to overuse this stipulation. 3 times in 8 months should be enough. Batista may say he won't stay down for a 10 count, but Undertaker has other ideas. Undertaker will retain the World title and await Mr. Kennedy. Come to think of it, considering they haven't fully turned Batista heel so far, they may not do it at all, and have him come out of the match regaining respect for the Deadman.

"The Condemned", unsurprisingly, has gotten ripped by the critics, who don't see any redeeming value to the 3rd WWE Films offering. Maybe Vince should consider making comedies.
