As we saw on Smackdown, Edge cashed in his ill-acquired Money in the Bank contract and defeated Undertaker to become World Champion. He returns to Smackdown as a regular after a 3 year absence, but did WWE actually make the right call?
Sure, the presence of Edge, and the return of Mark Henry, will fill a void on a roster already decimated by injuries. However, it seems that WWE Uncreative jumped the gun on this case. When Ken Kennedy's injury was first reported, it was assumed that the former US champ would be gone possibly for the rest of 2007 and return in January. Not so fast. After being examined by everyone's favorite doctor, James Andrews, at HealthSouth in Birmingham, Kennedy--and the WWE---was relieved to learn he didn't need surgery after all. He does have hematoma and some swelling in his arm and will be gone at least 6-8 weeks, meaning he should be back in time for the Great American Bash in July. Rey Mysterio should be back by then, and Triple H will be back on Raw shortly after that. Booker T might be back by then. Roughly translated, Edge isn't the long-term solution after all.
Think back to when he won his 1st WWE title at New Year's Revolution in January '06. He said he didn't want to be a transitional champion, but that's what he ended up being anyway. His first run ended after 3 weeks. His second lasted barely more than 2 months. As I outlined last time, Edge gets to renew old feuds with Chris Benoit, Matt Hardy, & Dave Batista. The original plan was for Kennedy to cash in the briefcase and take the title, so there was going to be a title change no matter what. When Kennedy got hurt last weekend, the hierarchy panicked. It's that simple.
At least with Edge as World champion, fans attending the Tuesday tapings will be treated to some real title matches, contrary to Chairman Wackjob's sham of a run as ECW champion. I've heard that Edge will face Batista at Judgment Day, and that will be confirmed next week. After that, everyone's figuring that Edge will get a steady diet of Batista and Benoit, with a side order of Hardy. Factor in Mysterio & Kennedy returning in July, and I don't see Edge getting through the summer with the title. Once Kennedy is activated from the DL, they'll probably put the title on him and do a major mea culpa to make up for this panic attack.
As if this wasn't enough proof that Vince McMahon doesn't know what he's doing anymore, along comes word that he tried to claim that "The Condemned" was sabotaged. If anyone sabotaged the movie, it was Vince himself, since it's been reported that he was much more hands-on with this film than with WWE's two 2006 releases, "See No Evil" & "The Marine". He's that desperate for a hit movie. The man has taken one too many chair shots over the years to realize that he's not the creative genius he was in the 80's & 90's, and is fortunate that the competition that's out there (i.e. TNA) is tripping over themselves trying to emulate and compete with WWE at the same time.
And then, there's the sick joke of Vince as ECW champion. He has the do-rag as a cheap shot at Hulk Hogan. If you haven't realized it by now, I'm embarassed for you. You can see his hair's growing back, and that rag isn't long for this world. He won't trade holds with his opponents, choosing instead to be lazy and unwilling to take bumps. I say, this sham of a title reign has to end at Judgment Day not because it's the plan, but because it's the right thing to do. The other right thing would be for Vince to be taken off television in a straitjacket, not returning until sometime around Christmas. Unfortunately for us, Chairman Wackjob files this under "wishful thinking".
