COLUMNS
Of turks & bad judgments
"The Reaction Zone" Written by: Jacob Gilbert on 5/19/2007

With WWE wracked with injuries on all three rosters, 7 people have lost their jobs in the last two weeks. 8 if you add Rob Van Dam, who supposedly was given an early release, according to Pro Wrestling Torch after RVD earned a DQ win over Gene Snitsky on Tuesday. We'll talk about the cuts at the end of this column. Right now, however, let's focus on this Sunday's Judgment Day PPV.

Raw division matches:

WWE title: John Cena (C) vs. Great Khali.

On paper you think, well, Khali has rolled over the competition since coming over from ECW back in January. He only has one loss on his record, a Last Man Standing match vs. Undertaker 9 months ago on Smackdown, and as Cena pointed out himself on Monday, Khali has yet to be pinned or tap out. Khali stole the spinning belt on the 5/7 Raw, but figure on Cena getting it back one way or the other. With news that Snitsky is being sent back to Raw to feud with Cena rather than challenge Bobby Lashley for the ECW title. Cena is being groomed as the new Hulk Hogan, then, instead of being a clone of the Rock or Steve Austin. Not so much a good thing, but if it keeps the kids happy.....! Pick-Cena.

Shawn Michaels vs. Randy Orton.

Two vets going in opposite directions. Orton wants to get back in the title hunt badly, but HBK has unfinished business with Cena, and if not for Khali would be in the main event. Never mind the storyline concussion. HBK wins this one to get one last shot at Cena. Pick-Michaels.

Ric Flair vs. Carlito.

Talk about underwhelming. Carlito turned on Flair in a tag match on 4/30, but fans have been waiting for that since March. This was supposed to be at Wrestlemania last month, but it didn't happen. Now, it may be too late for people to actually care. Youth, though, has to be served. Pick-Carlito.

ECW division:

ECW title: Vince McMahon (C), Shane McMahon, & Umaga vs. Bobby Lashley.

It's time to correct the booking mistake from last month. Lashley has to get the title back, and Chairman Wackjob has to job. Dr. McNutty refused to compete at Backlash and on 5/8 vs. Rob Van Dam, but this time, Lashley will force the issue. This sham of a title run for the insane chairman comes to an end, because it's the right move to make in terms of business. Pick-Lashley.

CM Punk vs. Elijah Burke.

Punk's heel run as a member of the New Breed was cut short, and the storyline accelerated. Why? Because Chairman Wackjob doesn't want these guys showing him up and upstaging him. Well, guess what? I think they will anyway. Both men will one day challenge for the ECW title, just not right away, and in all probability, it'll be after Marcus Cor Van gets his shots in at Lashley. They're all better off feuding with Chairman Wackjob for embarassing the industry. Could be a show stealer. Pick-Punk.

Smackdown division:

World title: Edge (C) vs. Batista.

Remember when these two were on Raw? They had some decent matches when Edge was IC champion, but now the stakes are higher. I don't think they put the title on Edge just to job it away so quickly. Mark Henry could be a factor, getting involved in order to restart his program with "The Animal" while Edge waits for Ken Kennedy to come off the DL in 2 months. Pick-Edge.

US title, best 2 of 3 falls: Chris Benoit (C) vs. Montel V. Porter.

It's come out that Porter is Benoit's "personal project". Porter has studied tapes of Benoit, Dean Malenko, and the late Eddie Guerrero to better understand his craft. His work in the ring has improved by leaps in recent weeks, but he really does have to lose the Power Ranger style unitard he's been stuck with. I see this going the full 3 falls, with Porter finally getting the US title, freeing Benoit to get back in the World title chase. Pick-Porter, 2 falls to 1.

Now, let's take a look at the roster cuts.

ECW:

Sabu was fired right before the broadcast on Tuesday. Reports have it that he was practically begging to be fired, and was unhappy about the way he was used, including the fact that he was forced to talk. He's a lock to return to TNA and liven up the X division.

2 Cold Scorpio had been at OVW using his 1996 WWF gimmick as Flash Funk, and won a grand total of 1 match. For some reason, Uncreative suddenly decided they didn't have anything for him. Total BS.

Ariel, Kevin Thorn's valet/consort, didn't wrestle much, but was just plain hot. Now you have to figure Thorn is on a short leash and could be joining Ariel on the unemployment line ere long.

Smackdown:

Scotty 2 Hotty had the most seniority of those released, as he's been with the company since 1997-8. Used mostly as a JTTS in recent years, his dismissal is a real head scratcher, considering that at the same time it was announced that former cruiser champ Greg Helms had suffered a neck injury and may be gone for the rest of the year. The cruiserweight division hasn't been showcased as much in recent months, which IMPO may be in correlation to Rey Mysterio being on the DL more than anything else. The W*O*R*M, apparently, has been retired.

Vito LoGrasso was in line to return, this time to ECW and reform the FBI with Nunzio/Little Guido. This after Vito had his cross-dressing gimmick end courtesy of Ken Kennedy over the winter and a subsequent run as Deep South champion. With rumors of a ECW tag tournament on the horizon, this was a bad move.

Raw/Heat:

Nick Mitchell was the cornerman for the Spirit Squad, and rarely wrestled. While fellow Tough Enough 4 contestants Mike Mizanin & Daniel Rodimer (Rodman) are on the road, Mitchell was sitting home collecting a paycheck for doing nothing, as there was no mention of him being in OVW, either. Rumors over the winter had Mitchell linked with Torrie Wilson off-camera, but apparently that didn't go too far, either. The Tough Enough curse continues on the Raw brand.

Rob Conway was "fired" on national television by Vince McMahon over the winter, and made a token appearance at OVW a while back. Other than that, Conway was also being paid to stay home rather than continue an embarassing losing streak on Heat. This was another mistake, since his former La Resistance mates, Syl Grenier & Rene Dupree, were reunited briefly in ECW a ways back, only to have Dupree go away, suspended for violating the wellness policy, stifling the team's push after 1 match. Conway could've filled the hole, but how to explain his sudden return after being humiliated by Chairman Wackjob? Therein lies the rub.

Most of the above cuts were, in my opinion, salary dumps to clear room for this year's diva search, which starts next month. More proof that Chairman Wackjob just doesn't get it, and neither does his hatchet man, Johnny "Space Ace" Lauranitis. If Lauranitis and/or the McMahons paid closer attention to the DL, some of these people might still be employed.

In order to prevent further cuts, Vince McMahon needs to wake up from his delusional dream world and re-embrace reality. It's that simple, but so difficult when the owner of the company has lost his mind.
