The 3rd annual One Night Stand PPV takes place tomorrow, but the shine has been taken off this event, now that it's no longer exclusive to the ECW brand. In fact, Raw is big-footing all over this show, as 1/2 the matches involve Raw talent. There are 4 title matches in all, and ye scribe sees 2 titles changing hands.
Raw division:
WWE World tag team titles (ladder match): The Hardys vs. The World's Greatest Tag Team.
It was one of the smartest moves the creative team made reuniting Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin a few months back. Unfortunately, that same team has avoided putting the titles on the former college All-Americans (Seton Hall & Minnesota, respectively) for a number of reasons. Haas has never been in a ladder match, but the others have. The X-Factor is the team not in the match, Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch, who have decided to unite with the Hardys in a variation on the old Trojan Horse ploy. Will they get involved? And if they do, whose side are they really on? Remember, too, that Chairman Wackjob is not committed to letting the Hardys team full-time, which would necessitate having Matt move from Smackdown back to Raw, now that arch-nemesis Edge is on Smackdown. I see the Country Gentlemen getting involved, all right, and costing the Hardys the match. Pick: WGTT.
WWE title (falls count anywhere): John Cena vs. Great Khali. On paper, you think the Punjabi Giant might finally be able to beat Cena and end Boston Shady's title run. Uh-unnnh! Cena will have every weapon available to him that isn't nailed down, and that's bad news for Khali, who suffers his first pinfall loss. Pick-Cena.
Non-title: Melina Perez vs. Candice Michelle (pudding bowl match): The snobby women's champion won't put the title on the line here, as a gimmick match like this would seem to not be worthy of a title defense. That alone clinches the result. Pick: Candice.
Stretcher match: Randy Orton vs. Rob Van Dam: Orton has tweaked his legend killer gimmick of late, having KOd RVD & Shawn Michaels on successive weeks with concussions, followed by post-match RKOs. I can't see Van Dam pulling this one out, as they should groom Orton to be Cena's next challenger, as a warm-up to another round with ex-mentor HHH later. Pick-Orton.
ECW division:
ECW title: Vince McMahon vs. Bobby Lashley (streetfight): You & I know Chairman Wackjob won't go into battle alone. He refused to lock up with Lashley the last two times, which kills his credibility. If Shane & Umaga, as expected, get involved, I'd look for Lashley to get some much needed help from the Originals and CM Punk, among others, to even the sides. This farce of a title run has to come to an end. Now. Pick-Lashley.
CM Punk, Tommy Dreamer, & Sandman vs. the New Breed (table match): The deterioration of the Breed as a stable continues, as I see Matt Striker being dumped from the group after this match. This one's a no-brainer. Pick: Punk/Dreamer/Sandman.
Smackdown division:
World title: Edge vs. David Batista (cage match): The other no-brainer on the card. Too soon for Edge to drop the title, and to put it on Batista now would be a major error, unless they're thinking of having Mark Henry challenge for the title next instead of waiting on Ken Kennedy to come off the DL. Expect Henry to get involved somehow to restart his program with Batista. Pick: Edge (best bet).
Kane vs. Mark Henry (lumberjack match): And to establish Henry as a threat to the title down the line, he has to win this match decisively. Really can't see anyone getting involved who doesn't belong. Kane has a bad knee and has asked for time off. He'll get it after this. Pick: Henry.
