I think it can safely be said that Vince McMahon is a fan of "The Sopranos". After all the media & internet hype over Sunday's series finale, "The Sopranos", critics said, went out with a whimper. The pundits wondered if Tony (James Gandolfini) would be killed off to bring closure to the series. He wasn't. One night later, the only TV character who could match Tony Soprano for ruthlessness would go out in a blaze of glory that many felt should've been Soprano's fate.
We will be reminded for about the next week or two of the final images of Monday's extra-sized Raw. "Mr. McMahon", still behaving rather bizarrely a week after losing the ECW title back to Bobby Lashley, walked out of the Wachovia Center in Wilkes-Barre, and into his white limo. As soon as the door closed, the limo exploded. Not the fate this writer had envisioned for the insane chairman, but what it does is create a new, all-encompassing storyline across all three brands for the rest of the summer.
For the last 5 years, "Mr. McMahon" had grown progressively more insane. The right solution would've been to forcibly remove him as Chairman and have him placed in an asylum on a temporary basis. However, Vince didn't see it that way. He figured the fans would see that and realize that beneath all the bluster, all the tough talk, all the bullying, was a weak man desperate for attention. He didn't want that to happen. No one would expect him to be "killed", though, and it would get people talking at the water coolers the next morning.
As it has since been revealed, the explosion scene was taped a day or two in advance, and the only ones who knew about the angle were the McMahons themselves. It's since been reported that "rescue workers" didn't find a body in the wreckage. That tells us that it's still possible that "Mr. McMahon" survived and escaped to parts unknown to plot his next move. Let them think he's gone, he figures, and when they least expect it, he'll be back. And I can think of a perfect time, too. Survivor Series. Think about that. It makes perfect sense.
Now, let's talk about the draft. The supplemental draft that was announced for tomorrow has been postponed to Sunday for angle advancement purps. As for what went down last night......
ECW: Adds Chris Benoit & Boogeyman. Loses Gene Snitsky & Bobby Lashley. Benoit adds credibility to the roster, and with a tournament likely after Lashley was stripped of the ECW title, Benoit will be a favorite. They might as well put the title on him and let the Rabid Wolverine be the standard bearer for the brand while at the same time molding people like Elijah Burke & Kevin Thorn into major players. Boogeyman was a slam dunk considering ECW is on Sci-Fi. I can't see why people are underwhelmed by this pick. Maybe now he'll be a heel.
Smackdown: Adds: Ric Flair, Chris Masters, Torrie Wilson, Great Khali. Loses: King Booker, Benoit, Boogeyman, Ken Kennedy. Flair takes over Benoit's role as the mentor to younger talents like MVP and Mike Mizanin, and judging by Batista's reaction, the former World tag team champions may reunite at some point. Torrie & Khali return to the blue & white team, but I don't get Edge's reaction. It wasn't that long ago he used Khali as a proxy when he couldn't work because of a jaw injury. The Kennedy-Edge feud goes out the door, as they'd rather have Kennedy be the one, once he comes off the DL, to beat Santino Marella for the IC title before he gets to John Cena. Cena will be busy with Booker and Snitsky anyway.
Raw: Adds: Booker, Kennedy, Snitsky, Lashley. Loses: Flair, Khali, Masters, Wilson. Taking Lashley away from ECW was a spite move by McMahon, and considering what happened later, Lashley will be considered a suspect. Wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they hot-shotted a heel turn to get him a singles title match vs. Cena, whom he'll face at Vengeance in a 5-way w/Booker, Mick Foley, & Randy Orton. Booker & Kennedy will officially be off the DL in short order. At least we have Masters vs. Batista to look forward to.
In comparison to past drafts, this was, actually, underwhelming. I actually called the first 5 picks correctly, and had Kennedy pegged to go to Raw, which tells us that Batista will regain the World title at Vengeance in his last chance.
Speaking of last chances, I see Khali & Masters moving to Smackdown as a last chance for both. We might not have either one to kick around by this time next year, or there might be a miracle and one of them (Masters, most likely) will become a player.
Last thing before I go. I'm not that into MMA, but Saturday's Tommy Morrison-John Stover match made me believe that Morrison's future is actually in wrestling. He claimed to be HIV-negative, a decade after a positive test effectively ended his boxing career, but before the bout, Stover was told essentially that his match was now a glorified boxing match. The rules were changed at the last minute, which should be a tip-off that something's rotten in Morrison's camp. He KOd Stover in 3 minutes and change in the first round, and based on the description I read, Stover was treated like a rent-a-jobber. Let's see what happens if they match Morrison, whose last brush with fame saw him get pummeled by Sylvester Stallone in "Rocky 5", with Brock Lesnar. Morrison will be looking to change careers again in a hurry. Just a hunch.
