Caught in the draft
"The Reaction Zone" Written by: Jacob Gilbert on 6/17/2007

The shuffling has stopped. The WWE can stop playing musical chairs for at least another year, maybe two. The draft is over. Let's see who moved where today and why.

Tag teams:

From Smackdown to Raw: Brian Kendrick & Paul London.
From ECW to Smackdown: The Major Brothers.

Outlook: Whatever plans there were for a tag division in ECW have been put on hold, and the Majors' feud with the New Breed has abruptly ended. Instead, Brett & Brian Major will now be the next challengers for Deuce & Domino. Meanwhile, London & Kendrick will be the next challengers for new World tag team champions Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch. Of those four, Murdoch's the only one who wasn't trained by Shawn Michaels. About the only way anyone remembers that Cryme Tyme were supposedly #1 contenders is if JTG & Shad suddenly turn heel. And I have a feeling that's going to happen soon, since Raw needs a secondary heel tag team.

Women:

From Smackdown to Raw: Jillian Hall.
From Raw to Smackdown: Victoria.

Outlook: Victoria's been so far out of the loop in terms of the women's title, it isn't funny. However, she joins real-life pal Torrie Wilson on Smackdown, and it will be interesting to see how they'll reset the table in the women's division there. Jillian may need a face turn in order to get in line for a crack at current women's champ Melina Perez, and I'd venture to say that the pop diva wannabe gimmick may have reached its end.

One last thought on Victoria: Having her manage Chris Masters would be a good thing, especially if Masters gets pushed toward the US title.

Men:

From Raw to Smackdown: Kenny Dykstra & Eugene.
From Raw to ECW: Viscera & Johnny Nitro.
From ECW to Raw: Sandman.
From Smackdown to ECW: Mike Mizanin.
From ECW to Smackdown: Hardcore Holly.
From Smackdown to Raw: William Regal & Daivari.

Outlook: Eugene had just debuted a new pseudo-superhero costume last week, but had been stuck in limbo (read: Heat) for several months. I don't get the new gimmick at all, but the move to Smackdown does mean a feud with Greg Helms (formerly Hurricane) is in the offing once Helms comes off the DL (neck). Outside of that, Eugene is still going to be treading water unless Michael Hayes can do something worthwhile with him in the interim. Nitro & Dykstra are being split up as a team, which is just as well, since they were 0-forever anyway. Dykstra to Smackdown I had envisioned, but Nitro? ECW? Either Nitro or Miz will end up in the New Breed replacing Matt Striker once they get around to finishing that storyline. Daivari going to Raw I don't get, since that denies him the opportunity to challenge for the cruiser title, and other than an endless series of matches with Hacksaw Duggan, what's there for him to do? Sandman moves to Raw as the first step toward an inevitable release. That's what I see. He might get to share some beer with Stone Cold Steve Austin before the summer's over, but that may be the lone highlight.

Hardcore Holly goes back to Smackdown while still on the DL, which means he may get some World title shots once he returns. Regal joins his pal Triple H on Raw, and could be groomed toward being the GM there, replacing de-facto GM Jon Coachman. I see Viscera doing one of two things in ECW. If he remains the "World's Largest Love Machine", he flirts with the girls of Extreme Expose in a reprise of his angle with Lillian Garcia from 2 years ago, or he ditches that gimmick and reverts to being a daemonic monster, setting up a feud for Boogeyman.

We'll just see how this all plays out.

Meanwhile, I was saddened to learn of the passing of former AWA & WWF women's champ Sherri Martel on Friday. Not all of the details have been made public as yet, but the wrestling community has lost a true legend.
