COLUMNS
Ten tainted little indians
"The Reaction Zone" Written by: Jacob Gilbert on 9/06/2007

Last weekend's tapings shed some light as to who was placed on suspension last week for violating the infamous WWE Wellness Policy. With Smackdown still to air tomorrow night, let's take a look at the Tainted Ten:

Smackdown:

Chris Masters: The "Masterpiece" is gone for 60 days, as this would be his 2nd offense in as many years. He'd just started a mid-card feud with Chuck Palumbo, but that has been backburnered.

Shoichi Funaki: Filed under, "Say what?". Quiet, unassuming Funaki, former cruiserweight champion and Smackdown's resident underdog, suspended? So it would appear. Funaki, like Masters, wasn't in Cincinnati for the taping last Saturday. However, there could be more to this than meets the eye.

Chavo Guerrero, Jr.: Ay caramba! It's been reported that Guerrero had placed orders with Signature Pharmacy of Orlando some six months after the death of his uncle Eddie. You would think that he would've seen Eddie's passing as a sign that it was time to walk away from the drug culture. Peer pressure, methinks, might have affected his decision making in this case.

ECW:

John Morrison: The rapid rise of the former Tough Enough season 3 co-champion to the top of the ECW roster has taken a sharp detour with a 30-day suspension. This is why he dropped the title to CM Punk on this week's show, a title change that, IMPO, should've happened at Summerslam. Rumors have already surfaced that Morrison is to get the title back upon his return. What message would that send? For the suspension to mean something, Morrison has to work his way back up the ladder from scratch. Take Masters for example. After his first suspension, Masters was made a JTTS, and it was only within the last 6 months that he was actually considered for a fresh push. Clearly, Vince McMahon isn't paying attention to details if he's actually decided that Morrison is to be his long-term champion in ECW. The retro-60's psychadelia promos don't work in 2007. You'd have a better chance of seeing someone like Elijah Burke as champion than suffer through more of Morrison's pseudo-rock star posturing.

Raw:

William Regal: Another one for the "Say what?" file. Regal was just getting comfy as a tweener GM, and will likely return as a full-on heel GM to feud with John Cena, meaning that Raw's head scribbler, Brian Geekwitz, is choosing to go back to the recycling bin, revisiting the 2003-04 feud involving Brock Lesnar, Paul Heyman, and the late Chris Benoit over on Smackdown rather than do something daring and original. I can picture Regal in the Heyman role as a buffer blocking Cena's path to Randy Orton.

Santino Marella: More than 4 months after the "Milan Miracle", Marella was just settling into a role as a comedy heel after a face run flamed out. When he returns, it'll be in a feud with the man that chased him out of the arena on Monday, the Sandman.

King Booker: Like Masters & Funaki, Booker was MIA from the tapings, and it was a coincidence that his PWA promotion had a house show on Saturday night, when he could've flown to Columbus the next day. Reports say that he's told pals he's on the shelf for 60. This might be the end of his current gimmick, despite earlier reports that had him claiming he wasn't going back to being plain ol' Booker T. However, he's shot his wad as "King Booker", IMPO, as that act went stale some time ago. I guess it wasn't too much of a coincidence that he was a tag champ 3 years ago with Rob Van Dam.

Umaga: My brother had a comment the other day. He pointed out how Samoans have traditionally been naturally big, never seeming to need enhancements of any kind. When the 2-time IC champ returns, he'll likely be programmed against Triple H, who was responsible for "injuring" Umaga on Monday.

This could also be a gimmick killer. After his issue with HHH runs its course, I'd not be surprised to see Umaga disappear and return to his former role as Jamal. His cousin Rosey wants to return, and a 3:00 Warning reunion, which was scrubbed a year ago, could finally happen, as Raw needs tag teams.

Charlie Haas: Haas' exit on Monday wasn't quite as painful. He did a clean job for Brian Kendrick in a tag team match on Raw, and they could've made a case for an injury angle, the way Haas was perceived to have sold a Paul London mushroom stomp to his left arm, at least from where I sit. They can always say Haas "broke his arm but finished the match", to explain his absence.

And, then, it hit me. Haas & Funaki live in Texas these days. Umaga just moved down there himself, and Haas' partner, Shelton Benjamin, was reportedly planning on doing the same. Haas, Umaga, & Funaki were all on the Signature list. Benjamin wasn't. Kinda makes one wonder.......!

Ken Kennedy: If he's gone, it won't be until after the 9/10 show from his home town of Green Bay. They already had to call an audible on the McMahon "bastard son" angle by taking Kennedy out of the picture, and could bring him on long enough for Vince McMahon to "fire" him on national television, which would be the ultimate embarassment for any superstar. After 30 days, Kennedy could return to Smackdown, and they could say that Smackdown GMs Teddy Long & Vicki Guerrero took advantage of the opportunity and re-signed Kennedy, who debuted on Smackdown a couple of years ago.

Then, there's other factors. Now, they're adding marijuana to the list of substances they'll test for, which closes the door on any chance RVD might have of returning. It came out in the press earlier this week that Ric Flair is quitting after nearly 6 years in his 2nd tour of duty with WWE. Then, his name turns up in connection with the steroid scandal in articles making the rounds today. The initial reports of his leaving supposedly had nothing to do with the Signature case, but suppose it really did? That would do more to tarnish the "Nature Boy"'s reputation than any amount of misbooking done by WWE Uncreative over the last 6 years could.

In an unrelated---sort of---note, TNA earlier this week decided that they didn't want Andrew Martin around anymore, and he'd only been with the company as a non-contract player for barely a month! Preventive action? Yes, but there's always the chance he'll come back. WWE cut Martin from the ECW roster back in February, and he surely isn't welcome back there now, given the current climate.

Meanwhile, Mike Bucci (Nova/Simon Dean) and Nick Dinsmore (Eugene) were let go last week. Bucci's reportedly planning to leave the wrestling business altogether, his competitive days seemingly over. Eugene had already been suspended once for violating the Wellness policy, and might've gotten 60 if he were on the Signature list. I think there's a good chance Dinsmore will be back, not as Eugene, but as himself, down the line. The Eugene gimmick was long since played out anyway, despite the makeover into a pseudo-superhero right before being drafted to Smackdown.

It's possible that there may be more suspensions and/or firings before this is all said and done. WWE really needs to clean house, and it starts by distancing itself from the culture it created more than 20 years ago. But is Vince McMahon willing to make it happen? We'll soon see.
