The news came out earlier today that CBS decided to cancel "Secret Talents of the Stars" after just one episode due to low ratings. Given the knee-jerk mentality of network executives in this day & age, it doesn't surprise anyone that the suits at CBS, after seeing the poor numbers in the Nielsen ratings, decided not to invest any more advertising or air-time to "Secret Talents". What this means to wrestling fans is that Ric Flair, who was held out of Tuesday's episode and wasn't scheduled for at least another two weeks, won't demonstrate his "secret talent"--salsa dancing---just yet.
So what did "Secret Talents" in? Other than ratings, there were other factors. To wit:
*Familiar competition: 10 pm (ET) is a difficult time on Tuesdays. You have "Boston Legal" on ABC, "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" on NBC, and, of course, ECW on Sci-Fi. All three have loyal audiences, and ECW would've been the most affected had "Secret Talents" succeeded, since their ratings are the weakest of WWE's 3 prime-time shows.
*Reality show burnout: There are just too many of them on the air now, largely because they're cheaper and easier to produce, saving the networks and their corporate parents some money. Unfortunately, those networks haven't learned from ABC's mistake of overplaying "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" several years back. "Millionaire" at one point aired as much as 4 nights a week, simply because ABC became too dependent on it for ratings. Just as unfortunate is the fact that there are more reality shows in the pipeline on the thinnest of ideas.
Don't think, however, that we won't see Flair do the salsa at all. Browsing Google groups earlier today, I noticed that someone had posited the idea of WWE trying to pitch Flair to the producers of "Dancing With the Stars". Not a bad idea, that, considering that WWE Diva-turned-actress Stacy Keibler finished 3rd 2 years ago on "Stars", and parlayed the gig into a contract with ABC's parent, Disney, that has landed her on a number of ABC shows since. "Dancing" has had a few men in Flair's age group, including "Family Feud" host John O'Hurley, competing in the past, so Flair would be a good fit. I wouldn't be at all surprised to read Flair's name among the contestants for the next "season" of "Dancing".
WWE was represented on "American Idol"'s "Idol Gives Back" special on Wednesday by Triple H & John Cena. Chris Jericho was scheduled as well, but he was left on the cutting room floor. Someone at Fox probably doesn't like Y2J, since he was the 1st contestant eliminated on "Celebrity Duets" in August 2006.
Despite the bad publicity he got earlier this week, Mike Knox is on the Smackdown-ECW tour and worked today's show in Valencia, Spain. Knox was held out of Tuesday's ECW show as a precaution, given the steroid case in Georgia, where Knox once maintained a residence while with Deep South Wrestling.
