We open with Vince McMahon, who now says that last night's
tribute show in memory of Chris Benoit was a mistake. When
you have as little information as they did at that time,
what else could you have done? From this point forward,
though, there will be no mention of Benoit by any of the
announcers.
Johnny Nitro vs. John Cena (non-title).
The WWE champion is the first one out and gets a phat pop
from the fans in San Antonio. Tazz & Joey act like it's
great to see Cena back in ECW, considering it's the first
time in a year he's been on their show. The storyline to
this match, however, is the maturation of Johnny Nitro as
a performer. In the past, Cena has owned Nitro, all but
squashing him when they fought on Raw. Not so this time.
Cena made Nitro look like a deserving champion, and sold
for him big time. Great spot saw Cena try the FU, but Nitro
countered out and hit a springboard enziguri for 2. Finish
saw Cena hit a guillotine legdrop off the top, then went
straight into the STFU. Nitro tapped almost immediately.
Winner: John Cena.
Special guest #2 is Roddy Piper. "Hot Rod" barely
gets started talking about some hardcore moments of his
own, referencing his dog collar match with Greg Valentine
for example, before Matt Striker comes out with a birthday
cake. The insincerity is obvious. Striker says it's an honor
to be in the same ring with Piper, but then wants the Hall
of Famer to sing Happy Birthday. Piper does, then acts like
he's forgotten Striker's name. Well, you know where the
cake went. Right into Striker's face. That wasn't the end
of it. As Piper leaves, the Boogeyman's music hit, and Boogey
came out from under the ring. Striker tried to run, but
Piper threw him back into the ring. Chokebomb, plus some
regurgitated worms. Striker looked like something out of
one of Sci-Fi's "C" movies.
Elijah Burke vs. CM Punk (2 of 3 falls, #1 contender's
match). Pre-match, Nitro was interviewed backstage,
and claimed he was fighting off a cold, using that as a
lame excuse for losing. Please! Give me a break! Said he
didn't care who won. Well, he'd better care. Either one
of these two would mop the floor with this kid. Burke won
the first fall by hanging Punk upside down and hitting the
Elijah Express. However, he made the mistake of trying to
press the issue a little too much as the 2nd fall began,
and paid for it. He tried suplexing Punk back into the ring
from the apron, but Punk twisted in mid-air, and rolled
up Burke for the fall. 3rd fall was the best part, but not
enough to take match of the night honors away from Nitro-Cena.
Lots of near falls. Punk went for the Go To Sleep once,
but Burke countered with an STO for 2. They did a sequence
of near falls that resembled a sequence from the '96 Benoit-Malenko
match in Sturgis that was shown last night, but this time
it led to Punk hitting the GTS to wrap up the match.
Winner: CM Punk, 2-1. Post-match, Punk glanced up at the
heavens, appearing to pay tribute to Benoit. Cameras quickly
cut away from that and to Nitro, who came back out to have
a staredown with Punk to end the show.
