No opening montage. Instead, we start immediately with ECW Champion John Morrison. Prior to the champ's entrance, ring announcer Justin Roberts reads a prepared card describing Morrison as the "new face of extreme" and the "greatest ECW champion". Tazz, a former champion himself, isn't so sure about the latter part. Morrison declares that CM Punk will not get another title shot. Without an authority figure to overrule such arrogance, the value of the title goes down instead of up. Morrison invites more Doors jokes when he quotes from one of their songs, making reference to sweet delight, which has been denied Punk. Morrison decides on a 15 minutes of fame challenge, and even though he has a tag match in the main event, he's giving someone "from Fresno" a chance. Riiiiight.
Match 1: John Morrison vs. "this young man from Fresno" (non-title). Squashola. We never learn the ID of the jobber. Headbutt, then the corkscrew neckbreaker, and it's done. Morrison cuts a promo on the poor sap afterward. Winner: John Morrison.
The same Triple H video that aired last night runs again, and as revealed at the Bash, the "Cerebral Assassin" will return at Summerslam. We can do without the bionics references, except for the fact it might be a veiled shot at Steve Austin.
Match 2: Kevin Thorn vs. Stevie Richards Two men going in opposite directions. Thorn goes on the attack from the opening bell, but Richards begins working on the legs with kicks. Apparently, he got a scouting report from CM Punk. Anyway, Thorn regains control, but makes a critical error going for one pinfall, when he accidentally pulls Richards' right shoulder up. He gets only a 1 count, and ref John Cone very audibly lets him know about it. Richards comes back with 2 thrust kicks to the gut, then starts working on the legs again. Thorn rebounds and seems to have it under control. Sets up for the Splash Mountain crucifix bomb, but Richards squirms out and catches Thorn in a backslide to snap both his long losing streak and Thorn's winning streak! Winner: Stevie Richards.
Match 3: Mike Mizanin vs. Nunzio Rematch from 7/10. Pre-match, Miz calls Extreme Expose out, with seats set up in front of the announce table, so the girls can watch the match. Not quite as good as the first meeting between these two. The former cruiserweight champion doesn't get quite as much offense, but does manage a Sicilian Slice off the top for 2. Miz comes back with a new finisher, a knee-lift into a hangman's neckbreaker, to put away the "Pugnacious Paisan". Winner: Mike Mizanin. Post-match, Miz & the girls dance. The ex-reality show vet does have a few moves. Not pretty, but it's fun.
Match 4: Big Daddy V (w/Matt Striker) vs. Jimmy Cruz & Victor Galliardo (I hope I got the names right) Handicap squash. Striker joined the announcers and, prompted by a question from Tazz, gave the implication that Boogeyman was finished. Uh, I don't think so. Boogey will probably be back to battle BDV at Summerslam. Winner: Big Daddy V.
Match 5: Tommy Dreamer & CM Punk vs. Elijah Burke & John Morrison Incensed over Morrison's remarks earlier, Punk practically shames the champion into entering the ring to start the match. Of course, he's also probably tired of fighting Burke every other week, but I digress. Burke gets in a cheap shot to give Morrison a early advantage, promptly wasted. Burke is back in, but misses a corner charge. Punk boots Morrison off the apron, and then dumps Burke over the top as we go to break. Back from commercial, and Punk still has things under control, until he tags in Dreamer. Tommy becomes face in peril, even though he does get some good spots in, including a slingshot into the corner on Morrison. The heels keep the pressure on Tommy, and, taking a page from the Randy Orton playbook, work on the head, hoping perhaps to induce a concussion. However, Tommy gets out of trouble and hot tags back to Punk, who just flat cleans house. Morrison, however, tags out to Burke, wanting no part of Punk, who does a pescado on the floor anyway. Burke, however, is just flat destroyed. Running knee in the corner sets up the bulldog. Punk breaks off a pin attempt as he picks up Morrison trying to break it up, and greets the champion with a standing enziguri. Burke is KO'd yet again with Go To Sleep. Good night, sweet prince! Winners: Tommy Dreamer & CM Punk.
