Tonight's program begins with Jeremy Borash interviewing Christian
Cage & Tomko, the latter of whom is set to face Samoa
Joe in our main event. Borash approaches this interview as
if he's Gene Okerlund, circa the 80's. Cage is now calling
himself the "Instant Classic". Just what we don't
need, another heel living in a delusional fantasy world. Tomko
wants to know what's in it for him. Cage offers a title shot
if he beats Joe and eliminates the Samoan Submission Machine
from the picture. Tomko leaves, and Cage derides him behind
his back as being selfish.
Senshi, Jerry Lynn, & Jay Lethal vs. Chris Sabin,
"The" Austin Starr, & Alex Shelley.
Before the match starts, Kevin Nash & Sonjay Dutt came
down, and coaxed Lethal into doing his Randy Savage impersonation.
He does have the voice down. Unfortunately, the heels attacked
and gained an early advantage. It didn't last, however. As
we went to break, Mr. Bob Backlund came down and ultimately
joined the announcers. The Nutty Professor (Backlund) ranted
on seemingly forever about nothing, leaving Mike Tenay &
Don West confused. Near the end of the match, Backlund left
the desk and came to the aid of Senshi, who appeared to be
injured. This gets the attention of Starr. Backlund grabs
Starr's leg, and that leads to an argument, enabling Senshi
to slip in the side door and roll up Starr with a perfect
bridge for the win. Old school fans should remember that Backlund
himself won a lot of matches that way before adopting the
crossface chicken wing as his finisher of choice.Winners:
Senshi, Jerry Lynn, & Jay Lethal.Post-match, there was
nearly another confrontation between Backlund & Starr.
Backlund went for the chicken wing, but Starr escaped and
fled. When it was over, Senshi was back in the ring. Backlund
offered his hand, but the warrior declined, and instead bowed
to Backlund, who followed him out and returned the bow.
We're treated to a comedy skit with Eric Young, who's trying
to bring Robert Roode & Ms. Brooks' luggage into the hotel.
Naturally, Roode berates him for tardiness. This angle is
dying already..
Scott Steiner vs. Chase Stevens. Steiner
was ambushed on the ramp by Angle, leading to another pull-apart,
as the X division came back out with refs and security to
break it up. Once Angle was removed, Stevens was quickly destroyed.
Steiner needed just one big move, an overhead belly-to-back
throw off the top, to win the match. Winner: Scott Steiner.
After the match, Steiner got a mic and cut a promo on Angle.
It got personal, and that brough the Olympic Schizoid back
out and the brawl was on again. Jim Cornette had tried to
keep Angle from attacking Steiner earlier, but it obviously
didn't sink in. Angle snapped and went after Cornette. That
was all the "Louisville Slugger" could take, and
he had Angle ejected from the arena, which the crowd didn't
dig..
Alex Shelley came back out to premiere the latest from Paparazzi
Productions, a LAX beatdown of Johnny Rodz, who trained Brother
D-Von, among others. Brother Ray comes out and grills Shelley.
Kevin Nash returns to back up his aide. The distraction leads
to LAX attacking Ray. Shelley helps out with a low blow. Konnan
is on the ramp and instructs LAX to get a table. Hotstuff
Hernandez puts Ray through with a spinebuster. We're told
that D-Von is back in New York attending to Rodz. This feud
is dragging, but it looks like they finally got the reaction
they wanted as people were booing the LAX video.
A short interview with Chris Harris. He has only 35% vision
in his right eye, and the doctors won't clear him to return,
so TNA won't take him off the DL. That doesn't mean he's done
with James Storm. Samoa Joe is interviewed, but it's interrupted
by Abyss attacking a crew member. Joe cuts that off and tells
Abyss to stand up for himself and stop being a puppet. The
same message Sting's been trying to convey to Abyss for the
last few weeks.
Samoa Joe vs. Tomko. They cut to Christian
Cage in the dressing room a couple of times early. When Joe
got an advantage before the break, Cage vacated. One guess
where he's headed. Sure enough, Cage came down and hit a chair
shot as Tomko held ref Earl Hebner so he couldn't see the
infraction. Joe was trying to apply the Muscle Buster to Tomko.
A mere lariat gives Tomko a very tainted victory.
Winner: Tomko. Cage lingered around, which should've been
a means for Hebner to reverse the decision if they bothered
to show the replay. They doubled on Joe, but he made his own
save. Steiner came back out to make it 3-on-1. Abyss came
out, chasing the champ and pals away, but then hit the Black
Hole Slam on Joe to end the show.
