We open with a recap of last week's main event. Mike Tenay
& Don West give the hard sell to tonight's main event.
After the opening montage, the show proper starts with Team
3D. As Brother Ray puts it, "word on the street"
has it that the Steiners want a shot at the tag titles. So
he invites the Steiners to come down. Ray asks the fans to
give the Steiners a standing ovation, and puts them over as
one of the greatest tag teams of all time. However, Scott
isn't exactly interested in a mutual admiration society, and
rips Team 3D and their former base in ECW, claiming Ray &
Devon never traveled the world like the Steiners did. He has
Rick read off a list of the teams they've beaten, including
the Horsemen, Road Warriors, and the Freebirds. What it all
boils down to is that these two elite teams will meet at Slammiversary
for the TNA titles. West claims it's the first time ever,
but I think these two teams met in ECW back in the day.
Kip James & Lance Hoyt vs. Damaja & (Doug)
Basham (w/Christy Hemme). Not much to this match.
Kip is familiar with Basham & Damaja from their days in
WWE, but Lance isn't. Christy grabs Kip's ankle to stifle
his offensive momentum. Hoyt grabs Christy and carries her
off, but that leaves Kip all alone, and Basham puts him away
with a leg lariat. Winners: Damaja & Basham.
Christian Cage & Tomko are backstage, and Cage isn't exactly
thrilled about facing LAX. Tomko comes off like Batista did
2 years ago. Hmmmm.
Samoa Joe interview. Joe sees Sting as an obstacle toward
winning the TNA title at Slammiversary. 'Nuff said.
LAX (w/Konnan) vs. Christian Cage & Tomko.
Hector Guerrero is at ringside, and that will prove significant.
I think the former champs are default faces here, but you
couldn't tell by the lack of crowd noise. Konnan leaves his
charges and remonstrates with Guerrero. Homicide, you might
say, is the face in peril until a blind hot tag to Hernandez.
Homicide leaves his partner to help Konnan with Guerrero.
Hernandez sets up the Border Toss, but Tomko breaks that up
with a boot to the gut, followed by a DDT by Cage, who then
ascends to the top and hits his version of the frogsplash
to clinch the match Winners: Christian Cage & Tomko. Post-match,
Konnan has Guerrero on the ground with a crutch. Guerrero
squirms free and hits the ring, soon joined by Rhino &
Chris Harris. I think that sets up a tag match for next week,
but there's been a pattern in both tag matches.
Kurt Angle interview. He lost respect for Sting & Joe
long ago. I find it amusing he continues to claim he's an
honorable guy. He's been compromising his 3 I's philosophy
for years.
Sting vs. Samoa Joe (King of the Mountain qualifier).
Both men went to their primary finishers way too early. Joe
tried a Kokina Clutch, but couldn't lock it on. Likewise Sting
and the Scorpion Deathlock. Before the commercial, Christopher
Daniels came down to the ring. Sting doesn't understand why
his would-be protege even did this. Near the end of the match,
Daniels gets on the apron to distract the ref and passes the
baseball bat to Sting, who just throws it aside. He pushes
Daniels off the apron. Bad idea. Sting grabbed the ropes off
an Irish whip, but Daniels has retrieved the bat, and cracks
Sting in the back with it. Joe with a simple Samoan drop,
and that will be it. Winner: Samoa Joe. |
