TNA World Championship Match: Kurt
Angle def. Rhino, Christian Cage |
|
|
| Detailed Results |
Tonight's show is all about one match, for the TNA World title.
The attendant drama that spins out of it will, in all probability,
create undercard matches for the Victory Road PPV on July
15.
Kurt Angle vs. Rhino vs. Christian Cage (TNA World
title---No DQ). Pre-match, they played a video montage
of clips & sound bytes of all 3 competitors. Dave Penzer
has the night off, as Jeremy Borash is doing ring introductions.
Now he wants to be one of the Buffer brothers. Samoa Joe comes
out, and is meant to be at the desk with Mike Tenay &
Don West. Instead, after shaking hands with Rhino, and getting
blown off by Cage, Joe begins a brawl with Angle for the umpteenth
time. It spills backstage, where Jerry Lynn, Jay Lethal, and
others break it up, and Jim Cornette has Joe ejected from
the building. That wouldn't be the end of the outside parties.
The match finally begins after the break, and will take up
the rest of the show. It's funny how 6 years ago, these three
were 3/4 of "Team RECK (Rhino/Edge/Christian/Kurt)"
in WWE. That familiarity comes into play in the continuity
of this match. Coolest spot in the match saw Angle apply a
double anklelock on both challengers, which saw Cage &
Rhino escape simultaneously. That started a "TNA! TNA!"
chant. Angle hit 5 German suplexes in a row on Cage. I guess
now Angle will have an exclusive patent on that spot. Another
great spot saw Rhino attempt a superplex. Angle tried to turn
that into a tower of doom, but Cage pushed him out, and dropped
Rhino on top of Angle. Rhino got a near fall before Cage hit
a frogsplash to break that up and get a 2 of his own on Angle.
Abyss came down and chased Cage out, but Tomko & AJ Styles
were waiting and started a beatdown on the monster. It took
a while before Cage got back into the ring, and when he did,
it was after Rhino gored Angle through a table. However, Rhino
couldn't follow up, and Cage collected the scraps, or at least
tried to. Chris Harris came down, incensed over Cage's remarks
from last week, and pulled Cage out of a near fall. That brought
Tomko & Styles to start another mugging. Abyss came back
and saved Harris. Sting showed up to back up Abyss. Those
six brawled all the way to the back, and Cage was now out
of the picture. Rhino set up for another gore, but James Storm
showed up and spit beer in Rhino's face, enabling Angle to
hit the Olympic Slam for the win. A great match, a Match of
the Year candidate, even, tainted because of a jobophobic
heel (Storm) taking advantage of the No-DQ stip to further
his issue with Rhino.
Winner: Kurt Angle.
