We start with a recap of last week's main event. Jump cut live to US Airways Arena in Phoenix. Randy Orton, John Cena, & Triple H are all in the ring, introduced by GM William Regal for a staged photo op. Cena cuts a promo on HHH, saying he thanked Helmsley for not DQing him last week, but didn't appreciate the post-match pedigree. HHH shot back that he wanted Cena in the title match. As if anyone needed further prompting, Cena, knowing what Hunter was talking about, referenced Wrestlemania 22, when he made the Game tap to the STFU. Orton, sounding like he took elocution lessons from William Shatner, cut a promo on both challengers, claiming he'll still be the champ at Mania this year. Cena & Helmsley dumped Orton and started fighting amongst themselves. Orton ended that with RKOs to both challengers. Consider the one given to HHH a receipt for last week. After the break, Orton runs into Ken Kennedy, who thinks he'll win Money in the Bank for the 2nd straight year, and plans on cashing in that same night. Orton isn't fazed.
Match 1: Cody Rhodes & Hardcore Holly vs. Santino Marella & Carlito (w/Maria)(non-title) The #1 contenders already own one non-title victory over the tag team champs, but that was about a month ago, so I guess they needed to have another one to refresh people's memories. Maria came out wearing a black mini-dress bearing the Playboy logo. Santino now has a Mohawk haircut. An Italian with a Mohawk? I pity the poor fool! I digress. Santino was actually in the match for a change, instead of just hanging around acting like a jerk. Cody was face in peril for the first half, until tagging out to Holly. Hardcore blocked the Backstabber by grabbing the ropes, so Carlito tagged Marella back in. While this is going on, Jerry Lawler is trying to get Maria's attention to bring her to the desk for commentary. Just as he brings her over, Marella sees this and is distracted. Holly then hits a spinning Alabama Slam to close the deal. Winners: Cody Rhodes & Hardcore Holly. Jim Ross tells us that the next issue of Playboy, with Maria on the cover, is supposed to hit stores in 2 weeks. In upstate NY, where I live, it'll arrive sooner than that. Don't ask. It just happens. Now, they're recapping the Floyd Mayweather-Big Show confrontation from last week. Earlier today, both took part in the Wrestlemania 24 press conference in Los Angeles. Yes, Mania will be in Orlando, but that's also TNA country, and they were taping this week's Impact today. Mayweather made it rain by throwing money to the crowd. The emphasis was on him & Big Show, even though there were comments from HHH & Cena. They're implying, including comments at the arena by Lawler, that Mayweather will wrestle. So much for Show finally getting to box. Todd Grisham is backstage with William Regal, who announces that Orton & Kennedy will face Cena & Helmsley in tonight's main event. Chris Jericho shows up, fresh from a week's vacation, and rags on Regal for his black widow spider 'do. Regal puts him in a Money in the Bank qualifier vs. one of last week's winners, Jeff Hardy. Doesn't make sense, but then, considering the way Royal Rumble qualifiers were booked last month......! Jericho referenced a 2001 angle when he offered to pour Regal some tea. His parting shot was a diss on Regal's wardrobe.
Match 2: Jeff Hardy vs. Chris Jericho (non-title) As noted, for Jericho, this is a Money in the Bank qualifier, but when was the last time Jeff defended the IC title? What is it with the second tier championships in the company lately? Anyway, as was the case when Shel Benjamin qualified by beating Jimmy Wang Yang 3 days ago, this is going to be a tough act to follow. Let's jump to the late part of the match. Hardy went for the Whisper in the Wind, but Jericho crotched him on the top rope and tried a reverse superplex. Hardy elbowed him off and hit the Whisper, getting a 2 count. Hardy hit a gourdbuster, but missed the Swanton Bomb. Jericho hit the Lionsault for 2, but missed an enziguri. Hardy tried to hit a huracanrana, but Jericho tried again for the Walls. Hardy kicked him off, but Jericho came back and jack-knifed into a cover, only to roll through into a sunset flip to gain the fall. Winner: Chris Jericho. WWE Chairman Vince McMahon is out now, and reportedly, he plans to apologize to Hornswoggle for what happened last week. He says it was a mistake to put 'Swoggle in the cage. He promised tough love, and he delivered, whipping the former cruiser champion with his belt. However, John Bradshaw Layfield crossed the line, and also needs to apologize. JBL comes out and says he's sorry. Sorry he didn't do it sooner. Why? Because 'Swoggle isn't Vince's kid after all. According to JBL, Hornswoggle is really Finlay's boy. 'Swoggle has no idea of his true parentage, and that Finlay knew all along. The way JBL's talking, Finlay might've been in collusion with Shane & Stephanie, but the 10 Gallon Bully intends to beat the truth out of the Fighting Irishman the next time Finlay steps into the ring. Sounds to me like it'll be JBL vs. Finlay at Wrestlemania!
Backstage, Triple H is preparing for the main event. Enter John Cena. Hunter assumes it's going to be the standard gaga. They don't like each other, but let's work things out. Hunter definitely doesn't like Cena, and the feeling's mutual, but Cena warns HHH to watch his back, not Cena's, tonight.
Match 3: Umaga vs. DH Smith It's been a while since DH (David Harry) Smith has been on Raw. He's been stuck on Heat since coming back from suspension, and as JR put it, he's got a mountain to climb in the Samoan Bulldozer. Smith's penance, if you will, continues, as he's totally squashed. Buttsplash in the corner sets up the Samoan Spike. Goodbye, Mr. Chips! Winner: Umaga. Backstage, William Regal is joined by his one-time protege, countryman Paul Burchill, and his sister Katie. Wills reads a telegram purportedly from Vicki Guerrero, challenging Wills to send someone from Raw to face a Smackdown wrestler at Wrestlemania. Regal chooses Umaga, but Katie touts her "big brother" as a better choice. As she leaves, Paul tells Wills that he thinks Katie's interested in the GM. Hmmmm, nothing like a little, ah, misdirection........ Scheduled for ECW tomorrow: The war between former Extreme Expose members Layla & Kelly continues in a mixed tag, with Santino Marella & Kofi Kingston the respective partners du jour.
Match 4: Shawn Michaels vs. Lance Cade (w/Trevor Murdoch) It's teacher vs. student in our next match. In case you didn't already know, HBK trained Cade, and while they've faced each other in tag team action before, this is a rare occasion to see them square off 1-on-1. The former tag team champions are already in the ring as we come back from commercial, and that's a bad sign right there. Cade hit a uranage, then went up top, hoping to connect with the elbow. However, he misfired, but HBK didn't miss. Michaels went for the superkick, but Murdoch went to the apron, and got punched back to the floor. Michaels picked up Cade's attempt at a sneak attack, and hit the modified figure four. Murdoch ran in and elbowed HBK, ending the match. Winner: Shawn Michaels via DQ. Cade & Murdoch pressed the attack, but Michaels made his own save, hitting a short superkick on Murdoch, then a more standard version on Cade. Michaels is bleeding, suggesting that he rebroke his nose. Ric Flair comes out with a proposal. Him vs. Michaels at Wrestlemania. Shawn reminds that Flair has that edict hanging over his head. If HBK beats Flair, Ric's career is over. Shawn doesn't want to be the one to end the Nature Boy's career, but after a pep talk from Flair, Shawn changes his mind and the match is made. Wooooo! Mike Adamle makes his customary appearance and reveals the next inductees into the Hall of Fame's 2008 class. Samoan High Chief Peter Maivia and Rocky Johnson. Commentary from Afa, Pat Patterson, Vince McMahon, and---who else?---The Rock, who will induct his father & grandfather in Orlando. Added to the Wrestlemania card: Maria & Candice Michelle vs. Melina & Beth Phoenix in a Playboy Bunny match. Add Beth's women's title to the 2nd tier titles not being defended at Mania. Speaking of Maria, we have video footage of her photo shoot for the next issue.
Match 5: John Cena & Triple H vs. Randy Orton & Mr. Kennedy As JR likes to say, they don't get paid by the hour. There wasn't really much cohesion on either team, so it was a case of which side, if any, would implode first. Neither did. HHH played face in peril, with Kennedy & Orton taking turns battering the Game. He finally tagged in Cena, who just went off on Kennedy. Convienently, Orton was already on dream street as Cena rallied. Cena hit the 5 Knuckle Shuffle, but Orton cut off the FU. Helmsley sent Orton to the floor for a brief brawl. Meanwhile, Kennedy went for the Mic Check, only to be countered into the STFU. Kennedy tapped immediately, perhaps too quickly, as ref Mike Chioda came over to see Kennedy tapping like a sieve. Winners: John Cena & Triple H. Post-match, the challengers have another staredown, but Kennedy comes back and lays out Cena with the Mic Check while Hunter just stands there. Kennedy really does want to be a player for the WWE title, but can he win Money in the Bank two years running? Will Cena finally collect receipts from Helmsley, Orton, and now Kennedy? That's what next week's all about!
