We open with Triple H, Randy Orton, & John Cena in William Regal's office. The GM has decided to cede control of Raw to each of the three men in the WWE title match at Wrestlemania. Cena is in charge tonight, and having been hit with a pedigree & a RKO the last two weeks, Cena plans on something "extremely satisfying". Now, what could that be?
Match 1: Big Show vs. Brandon Hill Hill is the boxer imported for what amounts to a warm-up match for Big Show headed into Wrestlemania. Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is shown via satellite from Las Vegas. It was announced that victory could be achieved by pin, submission, or KO. Hill stalled at first, trying to frustrate Show. Didn't work. He hit Show with body shots, but as the colossus backed Hill toward the ropes, Hill instinctively went for a clinch. Show picked him up and tossed him into the corner. Boot to the chest set up the chokeslam. Hill's mouthpiece popped out upon impact. Winner: Big Show via pinfall.Post-match, Show & Mayweather talked smack at each other, with Mayweather promising to break Show's jaw at Mania. Somehow, I just don't see it.
Match 2: Shawn Michaels & Ric Flair vs. Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch This spins out of last week's Michaels-Cade singles match. Flair & HBK will face each other in what may be Flair's last match ever at Wrestlemania, but tonight, they will be partners. Luckily for them, Cade & Murdoch have become Raw's answer to Deuce 'N' Domino over on Smackdown, former champions who can't buy a win to save their reps. This match clearly deserved more time given who was involved. Cade worked over HBK, then tagged Murdoch, who made the mistake of going up top, only to be met with a pair of boots to the head. Cade is back in, and eats an enziguri, enabling Michaels to tag in Flair. Cade hits a sleeper, but Flair counters with a knee breaker, then the figure four. Michaels cuts off Murdoch and applies his own figure four as Cade taps. Winners: Shawn Michaels & Ric Flair. Post-match, Michaels cut a promo on Flair. He doesn't want to go through with the match at Wrestlemania, but if Flair insists on going through with it, he may have no other choice! Backstage, GM du jour John Cena has set up Orton vs. HHH and himself vs. Mr. Kennedy for a double main event. He then shoos Regal out of his office.
Match 3: Umaga vs. Super Crazy Regal has made his way to the broadcast table to talk up Umaga facing Batista at Wrestlemania. Meanwhile, Crazy, like DH Smith last week, is totally squashed. Blink, and it's over. Winner: Umaga.
Chris Jericho is relaunching the Highlight Reel after nearly 3 years off the air, and his first guest is Jeff Hardy. Both are in the Money in the Bank match at Wrestlemania, and clips are shown of Jericho beating the IC champ to advance last week. For now, Jericho doesn't consider Hardy a friend, but a target. Hardy feels the same way, and tells Jericho that he's not the same laid back guy he was 3 years ago. He punctuates this by giving Jericho a handshake, then the Twist of Fate. Interesting Wrestlemania commercial with Carlito & Maria. Carlito tries putting on some charm of his own to win Maria away from current tag team partner Santino Marella, but then must deal with an attack from a white dove (I think). Foreshadowing, maybe?
Match 4: John Cena vs. Mr. Kennedy For Cena, payback is the order of the night, after Kennedy's post-match Mic Check last week. Remember, too, that it was Kennedy who Cena faced in his last match before going on the DL last fall. Cena was the aggressor early on, forcing Kennedy into a defensive posture. Kennedy turned the tide in his favor with a DDT on the apron (miscalled by JR as a facebuster). Kennedy hit the facewash in the corner and got several near-falls. However, he went to the well one time too many, and it cost him. Cena came back with a series of clotheslines, then the Throwback, followed by a top rope legdrop (think Sicilian Slice), and the STFU. Kennedy tapped almost immediately, and it looked like he was lacerated beneath his lower lip. Winner: John Cena. It's already been leaked online on a number of sites, but tonight marks the public unveiling of Maria Kanellis' Playboy cover. 2006 cover girl Candice Michelle accompanies Maria to the ring for the presentation, hosted by Jerry Lawler. However, behind the red curtain is a defaced version of the cover, pockmarked with pictures of Santino Marella's face. Santino comes out and demands that Maria leave with him, claiming that she left him no choice but to do what he did. Maria, though, will not have her night ruined, and pointedly tells Santino "NO!" several times. He grabs her by the arm, but Lawler knocks him to the floor. Candice tosses the ruined cover, and the real one was hidden above the ring the whole time!! I believe this is the beginning of the end for Maria & Santino.
Clips are shown of the UAW-Dodge 400, held yesterday. John Cena was a guest of winner Carl Edwards, who has a championship belt of his own, which he teases he might loan to Cena for Wrestlemania.
Match 5: Carlito vs. Cody Rhodes (Money in the Bank qualifier) Of late, the former IC & US champion has had the number of Rhodes and tag partner Hardcore Holly, but tonight, the stakes are a little higher. It's not about the tag titles, but rather a chance at that infamous briefcase at Wrestlemania. Carlito went for the backstabber a wee bit early, but Rhodes grabbed the ropes to brace himself, and Carlito got nothing but canvas. Carlito tried to cheat his way to victory, but ref Jack Doan caught him grabbing the ropes. Rhodes hit a bulldog for 2. Mere moments later, Rhodes tried a victory roll, but Carlito stepped back, and this time hit the backstabber. Winner: Carlito.
JR & the King interview Floyd Mayweather, Jr., via satellite from Las Vegas. Big Show's match earlier was billed as "mixed martial arts", which would be an insult to MMA in general, methinks. Mayweather seems to be ignoring their questions, and picks up where he left off earlier, reiterating that he would break Show's jaw. The next inductee in the Hall of Fame? Mae Young. Full name, Johnnie Mae Young. Today's generation only knows her from a zillion comedy skits, usually in collaboration with her late friend, the Fabulous Moolah. However, Mae's been around seemingly forever, and now joins Moolah in the Hall. Finlay comes out, expecting a face-to-face confrontation with John Bradshaw Layfield. Instead, he gets Vince McMahon. Finlay confesses that Hornswoggle's really "his son", and that he plotted with Shane, Stephanie, & Linda to trick Vince into thinking 'Swoggle was his. Have to believe HHH was in on it, too, considering the fact that he played Vince like a fiddle with the faux tales of Vince's past sexcapades. However, Layfield "isn't there", and instead is at the hospital with Hornswoggle. It will be Finlay vs. Layfield at Wrestlemania, but the segment ends on a downer, as JBL dims the lights and begins throttling Hornswoggle anew. We can hear the former cruiser champion crying like a baby, and the rage builds in Finlay as we go to break. Next week, Raw goes to 3 hours for "Wrestlemania Rewind" night. John Cena joins JR & the King at ringside for our finale.
Match 6: Randy Orton vs. Triple H (non-title) These two have been through plenty of wars in recent years, and this is no exception. Back and forth they went, neither man seeming to give any quarter. Cena put over HHH as the benchmark of Wrestlemania, which might be a wee bit of a stretch. Undertaker might have something to say about that. He also said HHH was the strongest in terms of mind, body, & spirit. That might not be disputable. Late in the match, Orton went to the outside and collected his belt. Cena left the desk to cut him off. Helmsley took advantage and knocked Orton into Cena. Orton crawled back into the ring, belt still in hand. However, Hunter booted him in the gut and went for the pedigree, but as ref Mike Chioda went to put the belt back, Cena hit the ring, with payback on his mind. He hit the FU on HHH, but Orton again got the last word with the RKO on Cena. Winner: None, although some might presume Orton via DQ.
