We open with the Cutting Edge. Edge has Vicki Guerrero, the
poor woman's Ironside, as his co-hostess, while Teddy Long
just stands around wishing he could put these two con artists
in jail for stealing his rightful job. Anyway, Edge cuts a
promo on Undertaker, claiming he'll end the Deadman's 15-0
streak at Wrestlemania, and he & the Edgeheads will face Taker
in tonight's main event in a handicap match.
The guest is Ric Flair, and at first, Edge is the cordial host, as he & Vicki lead the applause for Flair. A little more than 2 years ago, Edge was using this platform to mock Flair during their feud on Raw. He tells Flair that his career will end at the hands of Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania. Flair disagrees, of course, and takes up the cause for Taker at the same time. He rips Edge & Vicki's relationship, calling it a sham and a scam, which only prompts the corrupt lovebirds to put Flair in vs. Edge and the Edgeheads next week in a cage, which will be nearly a month after Hornswoggle was mauled by JBL.
Match 1: John Morrison, Mike Mizanin, & Chavo Guerrero vs. Jesse, Festus, & CM Punk It's a bad sign when the ECW champ and the tag champs don't merit an entrance tonight. In fact, they're on the defensive virtually from the go. They get heat on Jesse after Miz pushes him off the top before the commercial. In fact, the break took too much time off this match, because when we get back, Jesse is able to make the hot tag to Festus, who just flat destroys Miz. He goes for a cover after a pump kick, but Morrison & Guerrero both make the save, postponing the inevitable. Punk takes out Chavo and hits a slingshot plancha over the top. Looked like Chavo was favoring his left knee on impact. Jesse hit a suicide dive on Morrison. Festus finished off Miz with the F5. Winners: Jesse, Festus, & CM Punk. Backstage, one percolating relationship has hit the skids, as Jamie Noble tells Michelle McCool, as only he can, that he feels they need to be seeing other people. Michelle is rocking a replica LeBron James (who else?) jersey, and acts as though a weight's been lifted from her shoulders.
Match 2; Montel V. Porter vs. Batista (US title) Well, it's about time the Most Vacuous Poser defended the title, isn't it? MVP hasn't defended the US title all that much lately, the last defense being vs. Rey Mysterio at Armageddon. Given that lengthy time lapse, under normal circumstances, Porter would've been stripped of the title a long, long time ago. After two non-title losses and being on the short end of a tag match over the last three weeks, a frustrated Porter finally decided to dangle the title like a carrot at the former world champion. Dumber things have happened. Back and forth it went, with each man focusing on the other's legs. Batista targeted Porter's right leg, but the champion, acting on instinct, still used the leg for dropkicks and at least one punt kick, but like CM Punk Tuesday night vs. Chavo Guerrero, couldn't capitalize and make a cover, selling the injured limb. He began focusing on Batista's left leg. He even used a modified version of Greg Helms' Nightmare on Helms St. for a near fall. Porter, frustrated, went for the Playmaker, but Batista hit the spinebuster. Porter, feeling he needed to "get out of Dodge", went for a low blow, knowing it'd cost him the match, but Batista blocked, and kicked him out of the ring. Batista chased him into the crowd and back, but a desperate kick knocked Batista to the announce table, buying Porter just enough time, as Batista failed to beat the 10 count. Winner: Montel V. Porter via countout. Clips are shown of the JBL/Finlay/Hornswoggle scenario from Raw. What this tells us is that the title matches have become secondary at Wrestlemania, and shouldn't be.
It wasn't that long ago that Jamie Noble was regularly meeting with Vicki Guerrero and getting himself put in matches with bigger opponents. Well, he meets with Vicki and Edge, and winds up drawing Big Show for an opponent. Jamie's mouth has written another check that's about to be bounced. Replay of the announcement of Johnnie Mae Young's induction into the Hall of Fame. Seeing those clips of Mae as a younger wrestler, you wouldn't believe how attractive she really was back in the day, right up there with icons like Betty Grable and Marilyn Monroe, for example. Yow! Archived interviews with Fabulous Moolah & Fred Blassie are included, which says that this has been in the works for a very long time, but apparently it took the passing of Moolah to finally prompt Vince to make the decision to add Mae to the Hall.
Jonathan Coachman moves into the ring to host the start of a month-long competition among the Smackdown divas. There are only 5, with Torrie Wilson on the disabled list (back injury). Eve Torres, Michelle McCool, Maryse Ouellette, Cherry, & Victoria. The fans will decide which of these is Smackdown's #1 diva, and the winner gets a custom designed motorcycle, not from Smackdown's resident bike expert, Chuck Palumbo, but from Beverly Hills Choppers. Cherry is a little on the shy side, dressed in a modest 2-piece polka dot bikini with ankle sox. She carried her skates to the ring, y'see. Eve is in a blue 1 piece, and threw her robe at the feet of Maryse, who appeared at first to be impressed. Maryse had her wrestling boots on with her ensemble, which to this writer is a fashion faux pas. Victoria & Michelle danced to their respective themes, and Vic took a tumble on the turnbuckles, which may just cost the former women's champion. When it ended, Maryse began hassling Eve, prompting Michelle to intercede. Vic & Michelle then faced off, with Michelle booting Victoria from the ring. Victoria & Maryse left together, which suggests a tag match may be in the offing, as early as next week. In this writer's opinion, the competition is tailor made for Michelle to win and further her issue with Palumbo, who's in our next match.....
Match 3: Chuck Palumbo vs. Kane Tuesday, Chuck rode around the ring while Kane squashed James Curtis. He should've stood in bed. Tonight, it's a protracted squash. Chuck does get a minimum of offense in, specifically blocking Kane's flying clothesline, then hitting a boot to the head of his own. He went for the cover, but Kane sat right up and set up the chokeslam. Palumbo broke that with a head butt, then came off the ropes, only to run right back into the chokeslam. Winner: Kane.
Match 4: Jamie Noble vs. Big Show On paper, this looks like another squash loss for Noble, who has previously been fed to Kane, Undertaker, & Great Khali, among others, so would this be any different? Hmmmmm, well, of course not! Show no-sold all of Noble's offense. Cornered, Noble acted out of desperation and kneed Show below the belt, prompting ref Charles Robinson to call for the bell to end it. Show then grabbed Noble after selling the low blow for a few seconds, and finished the destruction with an open hand slap and 3 body shots to the ribs, the last two forcing Noble to spit blood. Well, at least Jamie wasn't choked out by the Undertaker. Winner: Big Show via DQ. Prior to the match, comments were solicited from boxing ring announcer Michael Buffer, former champion Thomas Hearns, and Eddie Roach, a former trainer for Oscar De La Hoya.
Match 5: Undertaker vs. Edge, Curt Hawkins, & Zack Ryder Earlier in the show, Edge bragged that Undertaker had never beaten him. I think we may need to check the archives to verify that idle boast. The arrogant champion doesn't show much inclination to compete early on, letting Hawkins & Ryder get squashed like a couple of grapes. What little advantage the heels get is squandered the moment Edge finally deigns to tag into the match. Undertaker greeted him with an attempted chokeslam, but Edge got out of that, and ate a boot to the head. Undertaker went for the figure four choke, but the Edgeheads broke that up, and bought Edge enough time to recover. Hawkins & Ryder were hit with a double chokeslam, although ref Mickey Henson could've called for the bell since there was no tag. Instead, Edge spears Undertaker and claims victory. At the same time, he may have written his epitaph at Wrestlemania. Winners: Edge, Curt Hawkins, & Zack Ryder.
