We begin with a contract signing. John Cena will defend the
WWE title in a Last Man Standing match vs. Umaga at Royal
Rumble. Cena attacks Umaga after signing, and wipes out the
Samoan Bulldozer with the ring steps, then FU's Armando Estrada
through a table.
Jeff Hardy & Maria vs. Johnny Nitro & Melina.
Short match, which was the theme of the night. It was sloppy
when the girls were in there, just like last week, which detracted
from the overall match quality, although Maria redeemed herself
with a killer tackle on Melina that knocked them both to the
floor, so maybe she's actually learning something from CM
Punk, and not just that sweet corner bulldog she hit early
in the match. Hardy hit the Whisper in the Wind, then countered
a superplex into a gourdbuster off the top, then hit the Swanton.Winners:
Jeff Hardy & Maria.
Ric Flair vs. Kenny Dykstra.1st of two returns
from New Year's Revolution. Shorter than the previous singles
matches we've seen with these two, and this time, it's all
about who really is the dirtiest player in the game. Dykstra
tried to take another shortcut, but ref Chad Patten caught
him using the ropes, so of course Flair won with his foot
on the ropes. Winner: Ric Flair.
Backstage, Vince McMahon has been trying to contact Donald
Trump, and it has to do with a letter the insane chairman
received last week, purportedly from Trump. It's clear now
that Vince isn't just goofing on Trump's media-driven feud
with talk show hostess-actress Rosie O'Donnell, but trying
to transfer the heat from Rosie to himself. Vince comes out
to the ring, and has the finish to last week's comedy match
replayed. He then brings out "Miss USA" (Torrie
Wilson) to read a prepared statement, written on a strip of
paper used for fortune cookies. Carlito interrupts, concerned
obviously for his lady, and takes a stand for the people,
telling Vince he's not cool. Vince feigns starting a fight
with Carlito, then calls out Great Khali, who just no-sells
everything Carlito tries and destroys Mr. Cool.
Mickie James vs. Victoria [Women's Championship Match].2nd
return match from New Year's Revolution. Again, these two
deserved more time than they got, because when you get right
down to it, this IS the women's division, plus Melina. Vic
hit the Spider's Web sideslam for a near fall, but couldn't
get Mickie into position for the Widow's Peak. Mickie KOd
Vic with a reverse thrust kick to end it. Winner: Mickie James.
Masterlock challenge: Chris Masters has gotten
a letter from Vince claiming that the Masterlock has not officially
been broken, saying that due to JBL's interference in Iraq,
Sgt. Jose Avila gets no credit. So we're back to the open
challenge, answered this week by Ron Simmons. It was so cool
hearing the APA theme again. Masters doesn't think Simmons
is a threat, which tells you something about the lack of braincells.
Simmons pushes him down, and after stalling, Masters applies
the full nelson. Simmons struggles, but is close to breaking
it when Super Crazy comes down through the crowd and hits
a low dropkick to the ankles, pitching both men forward, the
momentum enables Simmons to break free, but it looked as if
Masters had to release the hold because of the dropkick. After
a break, JR gets word through his headset that, yes, due to
interference again, the Masterlock still has not officially
been broken.
Shawn Michaels has arrived at the arena by this time, and
has been apprised by Todd Grisham of what happened to Duggan.
He regrets Duggan getting involved, since as Edge revealed,
Duggan was there at the arena when HBK made his WWF TV debut
in Bossier City several years back. Flair returns and promises
HBK he's got his back. Word of that must've gotten back to
the tag champs, because Flair is later laid out.
Shelton Benjamin vs. JTG. Each man has his
respective partner (Charlie Haas & Shad Gaspard) in the
corner, which proves significant. Benjamin hits a straight
kick to the chest, all but knocking out JTG. Shad uncovers
a turnbuckle pad, which draws referee Chad Patten and Haas.
He then scoops the legs out from under Benjamin on a powerbomb
attempt, and JTG cradles the former IC champ.Winner: JTG.
Rated RKO vs. Shawn Michaels.About what you'd
expect. Randy Orton & Edge had to function as a tag team,
so there were no legal double-teams. Shawn's face was a crimson
mask by the time this was over. He made his comeback, but
was speared by Edge. That should've been the end, but Edge
had bloodlust in his eyes, and decided to do one more conchairto.
Bad move. As soon as he brought the chairs in, Edge found
himself disqualfied as ref Mike Chioda called for the bell.
HBK avoided the conchairto, and rallied anew. He then pulled
a sledgehammer out of the ring and pounded the tag champs,
then hit the conchairto on Orton to a big pop to end the show.
Revenge is indeed sweet for once.Winner: Shawn Michaels via
