Once again, there's no theme music. Instead, for the 2nd straight
week, Shawn Michaels opens the show. HBK acknowledges Undertaker
winning the Royal Rumble, and says that if UT chooses either
the World title or the ECW title, the WWE title is "wide
open". John Cena, the current champ, comes out and actually
likes the idea of facing HBK for the title. Edge, however,
disagrees, and decides he wants a shot. So does Randy Orton,
who questions how many title matches his partner's had vs.
Cena in the last year. Seeds of discord between the tag team
champs continuing to grow. Cena challenges Rated RKO to come
down to the ring and fight, but as the champs make it down
the ramp, Vince McMahon stops them. He makes the match anyway
because he believes he can tell the fans what they want to
see. Oh, is that going to come back to haunt him later.....
Cryme Tyme vs. World's Greatest Tag Team.
After JTG pulled out a win over Shel Benjamin two weeks ago,
the two teams finally meet. Unfortunately, it's short with
a sloppy finish. The finish was actually similar to WGTT beating
the Highlanders on Heat over the weekend, except that this
time Benjamin got the win back from JTG using the jeans, which
ref Marty Elias had to pretend not to see. Not good.Winners:
World's Greatest Tag Team.
Melina thanks Mr. McMahon for "an opportunity" and
gives him a hug. Oh, please, spare me. Jonathan Coachman,
the Waylon Smithers of the WWE, comes in and says everything's
ready for "Mr. McMahon's Fan Appreciation Night",
in which Vince thinks he'll be thought of as a humanitarian
on the order of Mother Theresa, Ghandi, and Archbishop Desmond
Tutu.
Melina vs. Maria.Melina gets on the mic and
says this is now a #1 contender's match for the women's title.
This was a worse mess than the last match, as these two have
0 chemistry. Melina debuted a submission move, called the
"California Dream", which is a variation on the
late Eddie Guerrero's El Paso Lasso, with a back bridge into
a neck vise added. Maria tapped out almost immediately.Winner:
Melina.
After a break, Mickie James is backstage making suggestions
to the wardrobe lady when she's first interrupted by Super
Crazy, who gets in his new catchphrase. Melina shows up and
that leads to a catfight between the two women. Johnny Nitro
happens along, making his only appearance of the evening,
and actually pushes his lady back into the fray before the
girls are separated. Todd Grisham interviews HBK. This time,
Todd doesn't eat a superkick, but the telling remark Michaels
makes is, Cena is no HHH. Well, of course not.
Umaga vs. Val Venis. Total squash. Val got
no offense in at all. Corner butt-splash sets up the Samoan
Spike.Winner: Umaga.
Vince McMahon comes out wearing a cowboy hat, which he proceeds
to remove and stomp with his foot, showing his disdain for
hats, which he says makes people look stupid. JR would take
offense, and I believe JBL would too. A planted fan is brought
into the ring and is given a replica of Vince's Muscle &
Fitness cover. This was dying rather quickly. After the fan
leaves, Vince goes into a tirade, only to be interrupted by
none other than Donald Trump, appearing via videotape. Trump
rips Vince a new one, and reveals that he's arranged for the
fans to receive some money. Thousands of dollar bills, mostly
50's & 100's, come pouring out of the ceiling. Vince is
embarassed and humiliated, and storms out of the building.
Carlito & Super Crazy vs. Chris Masters &
Kenny Dykstra. Up to this point, this was the best
match on the show. In essence, this was a transitional match
for Carlito, as he moves from Masters to Dykstra for his next
feud, methinks. It's amazing how Torrie can hold Chloe and
an apple in the same hand. Masters pressed Carlito over his
head, but Carlito raked the eyes and freed himself, then hit
the backcracker to gain the win. Winners: Carlito & Super
Crazy.
Jeff Hardy vs. Great Khali.[Intercontinental Championship
Match] Not much to this, either. Hardy tried, but
of course couldn't bring the giant down. He hit the Whisper
in the Wind, but it only stunned the Bengali Behemoth. Khali
sat Hardy on the top rope, then chopped him in the head. Down
went Hardy, for a count of 10.Winner: Great Khali via countout.
Hardy remains IC champion.
Rated RKO vs. John Cena & Shawn Michaels [World
Tag Team Championship Match] It's been nearly 10
years since HBK last was a tag team titlist. I don't know
why Cryme Tyme were passed over for this spot, but the idea
was to set up the build for Cena-HBK, likely at Wrestlemania.
Pre-match, Ric Flair warned Cena about HBK, and that made
me think of the summer of '05, when HBK turned on Hulk Hogan
after a tag match on Raw to set up their Summerslam match.
Easily the match of the night. Rated RKO teased a breakup
early, as Edge started to leave after a collision with Orton
knocked him to the floor. He came back, however, and eventually
got heat on Cena. Hot tag to Michaels, and he starts like
a house of fire with the familiar moveset. Orton blocks the
superkick and dropkicks HBK. Orton is tagged in legally and
sets up the RKO, but that's blocked. Cena is tagged in and
promptly hits the FU. Orton is pinned, and we have new tag
team champs!! Winners & new World tag team champions:
John Cena & Shawn Michaels. Post-match, HBK was poised
to hit the superkick, but Cena saw that coming. They went
nose-to-nose with Cena holding up the WWE title before Undertaker
made a surprise appearance, and stared a hole at Cena to end
the show.
