No theme music tonight. Instead, we start with a recap of
the sitch involving the World tag team champions, John Cena
& Shawn Michaels, from last week. Enter Cena, who is tired
of fretting and fussing over whether or not HBK will turn
on him. He calls out Michaels, who wonders if the reverse
would actually be true, if Cena would turn on him. Good question.
They're about to hook it up when Jonathan Coachman comes out.
Coach makes a gauntlet match for later, the 3rd match of which
will be in a steel cage.
Carlito vs. Ric Flair vs. Randy Orton [Money
in the Bank qualifier]
We're reminded about how Great Khali disrupted the Flair-Carlito
match last week. Orton politicked his way into the mix to
make it a 3-way, and, oh, by the way, it's a 3-way elimination
dance. Very good opener. At first, Carlito & Flair took
turns on Orton, but then, after Flair shoved Carlito aside,
Carlito hit the backcracker on Flair just as the Nature Boy
was fixing to apply the figure four. Orton recovered and tossed
Carlito out, then hit the RKO on Flair, eliminating his former
mentor. Carlito made a furious rally, gaining several near
falls with a quebrada and an F5, but couldn't put the Legend
Killer away. Orton completed the sweep with an RKO to Carlito.
Noticably absent was Torrie Wilson, who was preparing for
a match of her own later on. Winner: Randy Orton.
Next up is a Masterlock Challenge. It seems
as though no one's willing to try Chris Masters on for size
this week, so the Masterpiece decides to go after Lillian
Garcia. Enter Super Crazy, who gets the better of Masters
briefly, but makes one high risk move too many and jumps right
into the Masterlock. Masters finally gains a measure of revenge
after losing to Crazy a while back. Winner: Chris Masters.
World tag team title gauntlet challenge.1st
fall: John Cena & Shawn Michaels vs. World's Greatest
Tag Team. Former 2-time tag team champions take the
fight to the current World champs, but if you blinked, it
was suddenly over. Just when you think Michaels is ready to
tune up the band, Cena tags himself in after HBK took Haas
down. Cena slaps on the STFU and Haas taps immediately. A
little too quickly for my tastes.
2nd fall: Cena & Michaels vs. Lance Cade &
Trevor Murdoch.
Here was an opportunity for JR & Lawler to mention the
connection between Cade & Michaels, but it passed them
by. The former champs followed the pattern set by the WGTT,
but Cade & Murdoch were split up rather quickly. Michaels
gave Cena a wee bit of payback. Cena had Murdoch set for the
FU, but Michaels superkicked Murdoch off. Stunned & confused,
Cena pinned Murdoch.
3rd fall, steel cage: Cena & Michaels vs. MNM.
As with Carlito, the former 3-time tag team champs are missing
their valet, in this case, it's Melina. I think we know what's
on her agenda tonight. Joey Mercury's nose has healed, so
the faceguard is gone. Good riddance. Mercury wasn't winning
too many matches anyway with it. Maybe he & Tyler Hansbrough
of the North Carolina Tar Heels can compare notes. I digress.
The fact that it was MNM pretty much gave away the outcome,
as Smackdown would've had to be compensated for losing Mercury
if MNM won. Turning point here was when Johnny Nitro tried
a corkscrew moonsault on Michaels and got nothing but canvas.
Cena again takes the hot tag and collects a receipt on MNM
for last week. Nitro ends up falling victim to the superkick-FU
combo, and the champs survive for another week.
Winners: John Cena & Shawn Michaels.
Todd Grisham interviews Mick Foley, who plugs "The Hardcore
Diaries". Ashley Massaro interrupts to promote Playboy,
and proposes a trade. Mick turns it down and contemplates
it, but turns around to find the centerspread fold out exposed.
Ron Simmons shows up, and, well, you know what that means.
Video tribute to Ernie Ladd, with comments from JR and Gerry
Brisco, among others.
Rated RKO meet backstage. Trouble on the horizon as Orton
brags about winning earlier. Edge has a match coming up, or
does he, considering the shenanigans he pulled last week.....?
Edge vs. Jeff Hardy. Well, it's supposed
to be the revisiting of an ancient rivalry, but for the 2nd
week in a row, Edge chickens out, breaching his contract by
refusing to compete. Again, he makes some lame excuse to get
cheap heat, and summons Great Khali to take his place. Khali
has the match won after the tree slam, but Kane comes out,
carrying the chain and tow hook used in "See No Evil".
The ring empties in a hurry, as Edge & Khali both leave
through the crowd. Kane uses the hook to pull the announce
table down. Winner: None.
Melina vs. Torrie Wilson. We're supposed
to forget that Torrie's never beaten Melina. The poser princess
had Torrie's number when they were on Smackdown two years
ago, and still does. And just like she did on Smackdown, Melina
resorts to cheating to gain the fall, grabbing the tights
needlessly to secure the pin. Since the title wasn't on the
line, it wouldn't have hurt to let Torrie go over in this
spot. Winner: Melina. Post-match, Melina continues the attack
for no other reason than for jealousy over Torrie having previously
posed in Playboy, and having some earlier pics reprinted in
the new issue. Mickie James comes down, followed by Victoria,
but then Ashley, who will face Melina at Wrestlemania, shows
up, and with help from Torrie & Mickie, forces Melina
out. Ashley will be the first Smackdown diva to challenge
for the title since Melina did it at Survivor Series '05 vs.
Trish Stratus.
Vince McMahon is on his way to the ring, but Edge interrupts.
He's basically throwing Orton under the bus by setting up
Orton vs. Bobby Lashley tomorrow on ECW, and suggests that
if Orton were unable to go, that he'd be tossed from Money
in the Bank III. Another tag team's about to bite the dust......
Tonight's "main event", such as it is, is the contract
signing for the Battle of the Billionaires. Balloon sales
should be going up every time Vince McMahon opens his mouth.
As usual, he's full of hot air. Umaga & Bobby Lashley
are also out, but amazingly, after the brawl two weeks ago,
no punches were thrown. After both parties have signed, Stone
Cold Steve Austin comes out. He basically introduces himself
to Donald Trump and lays down the law. Like Trump will take
a stunner. Not. He's also got a little trash for Chairman
Wackjob, then takes a couple of brewskis and splits. We are
going into overtime. Vince predicts victory, then leaves.
Trump remains in the ring, then calls Vince back, ready to
rumble. He sends Lashley away. Vince sends Umaga & Armando
Estrada to the back. Vince gets in, takes off his jacket and
starts posturing. Trump shoves him over the table and onto
the mat to end the show. |
