Reaction Zone - An angle for the wrong reason

In Ring of Honor these days, backstage reporter-turned-manager/paralegal advisor Veda Scott has started a storyline claiming there are "unsafe working conditions" in ROH as it relates to the man she manages presently, Cedric Alexander.

This angle is all wrong for a number of reasons.

First, Scott is leeching heel heat away from Alexander, and putting the attention on her, in much the same way Vickie Guerrero did in WWE for the bulk of her tenure (2007-14). How is Alexander going to get anywhere as a mid-card heel if his "ambulance chaser" is taking all the heat? Given Scott's history, she'll end up turning on him eventually when ROH feeds her another worthy meal ticket. Alexander can just ask R. D. Evans about that. Scott left his side, and would later turn on Moose and Stokely Hathaway.

Second, as Nigel McGuinness repeatedly pointed out in commentary on ROH-TV the last couple of weeks, Scott was the one who "signed the contract" for a No-DQ match between Moose & Alexander for All-Star Extravaganza in San Antonio two months ago. Moose won that match, and so the whining and the "litigation" began. Alexander has hit a brick wall in ROH as a heel, same as he did as a babyface. The high-ups don't see him as main event material either way at this point, and the cheap screwjobs over Moose at the start of the feud didn't help.

At the core, though, is this. Scott is also a wrestler. Since ROH began airing in upstate NY, my home area, 3 1/2 years ago, Scott has had limited opportunities to compete in the ring, swapping her power suits for tights & boots. Kevin Kelly mentioned on this week's ROH show that the women's matches can be found on ROH's YouTube channel. Please. Give me a break. If Scott wants a reason to "sue" Ring of Honor, it's not on Alexander's behalf, but for her own. In fact, when was the last time a women's match actually aired on ROH-TV itself? Maria Kanellis-Bennett has fought alongside her Kingdom mates, and needed illegal help to score a pin on ODB earlier this year, but that was in a tag match. She hasn't had a singles match since joining ROH that has aired on TV.

Digression aside, the storyline Scott has is going in the wrong direction, and it's not going to end well for either side. Veda sees other "women of honor", such as Athena, getting signed by WWE, and probably wonders why she isn't getting a call. Well, the answer's real simple. WWE or TNA won't know what she's got until she's allowed to show them what she can do, and if Delirious, the behind the scenes matchmaker, doesn't let her wrestle, then it's on him for suppressing Scott's potential. If she wants to be an ambulance chaser, fine, but the real reason's just been laid out for her, not some lame contrivance that makes her, Cedric Alexander, and everyone else look bad.
